The BIG Day

June is just around the corner and all over the world, brides are lining up for their big day, panic setting in. Some Dreamstime photographers are accomplished wedding shooters. Sooner or later, though, most of you will be asked to take photos for someone's event. Here are some tips for wedding and event photography. I've also added suggestions to ensure that some of your wedding photos will be useful as stock photography.
Up until over a decade ago, wedding photos were mostly limited to formal portraits with a few candid shots of the wedding and reception tossed in. Today's wedding may not always be a formal one and trends in wedding photography have evolved quickly in the last ten years to encompass a much wider range of images.
Lucky for couples (and photographers) everywhere, staged photos are now just a small part of the total package that a photographer can deliver. Most of today's couples want more than a framed picture for the mantle. The classic wedding picture is a valued keepsake but not useful as stock without a release.

Today's most popular images are more editorial in style. PDN is out with their latest Tying the Knot issue. The editors point out that the journalistic style of the last few years has given way in popularity to more lifestyle kinds of images. They suggest that a budding wedding photographer look at travel and lifestyle magazines for inspiration as well as actual wedding magazines.
As the top wedding photographers have added multi-media and even shows formatted for iPod download, fees for a professional wedding photo/video package have escalated. One photographer is quoted in PDN as saying he has charged as much as $50,000. So when your friend from work wants you to shoot his wedding gratis, you don't need to buy her a present!
The images that capture the anticipation and preparation of the wedding have multiple uses in stock photography. The photo of the bride and the makeup assistant works as a web shot for makeup artists and wedding planners. A wedding is the formal transition and announcement of one of life's major transitions: the girl in jeans trying on her veil sums it all up.
Weddings give a photographer access to many shooting opportunities that will be useful on the web sites of the wedding services support teams. These include wedding planners, videographers, tux rental services, musicans, florists, caterers, limo rentals, jewelers and honeymoon vacation resorts. Keep all these services in mind as you take images for the happy couple.

Brides Magazine recently put together a list of Don't Miss wedding photos. It's comprehensive and useful to both pros and those of you who will be called upon to step out of your usual roles to shoot Uncle's wedding. The lists can also serve as a reminder of shots not to be missed for other events such as a Quinceanera, Bar Mitzvah or anniversary celebration. Food, flowers and presents are part of the celebrations and add to the diversity of images.

You may have noticed that headless brides and grooms dominate our collection. But rather than cutting off heads, you might suggest a trade: releases in exchange for a part of your fee or for the favor of taking pictures
Brides in all cultures aren't dressed in the classic white wedding gown. Images of traditional, cultural weddings are needed in stock photography.
And don't forget to kiss the bride!

Tips

| • |
We could use more images of casual, hip weddings |
| • |
And we have no images of the bouquet toss |
| • |
Wedding images with model releases may be difficult to get but you should try |

They've made a promise to me to rectify the situations (3 of them) The first one has been removed and I have a promise of August 1 for the other 2.
Thanks!

Hello to all. First off I am a totally liberal guy but I think these 2 photo-montages (using my images) cross the line as to being acceptable stock usage. It's one thing to be on the cover where homosexuality is alluded to, It's totally another when the models are cut and pasted to be in the physical act of a same sex relationship
Is this acceptable Usage???
I agree with you and we will contact the user on your behalf but first we need you to contact support via email and supply us with some more information. We need to know the exact image numbers. Also do you have the books in hand so you know all the contact information and if they bought the images from us? - posted by

Thank you for responding to my question. Just now realized that my friend left his account logged in when I posted the first time. I now have another question, who decides, dreamstime, photographer, or model? Thanks again. . Sorry. I don't understand your question. But it is the model that has to give permission for sensitive issue uses if that is what you mean. - posted by

A question for thought. When models sign a model release they can be used in any and all publications correct? What about homosexual publications, I myself would not like to be caracterized as homosexual if I happened to model in a photo where another man also appears... Any thoughts on this. The big day article made me question this. Is there "protection" from this typ of use for those models who would not like to be portrayed as if they themselves are promoting, or living another "lifestyle" choice? Just curious, please don't take this as offensive I in no means want to start any arguments in this sensitive subject, just would like to know if anyone can answer my questions.
Thank you.
An expression of sexual orientation is considered a "sensitive issue" and to use images that imply non hetero-sexual orientation require written permission from Dreamstime according to our terms of use. - posted by

Beautiful article and also splendid images :-) What I wanted to share with you is one opinion. Wedding topics is very interesting but I do feel it will never be mine favorite... anyway I have read some time ago one article about it where were some very good advice, but I can't recall one remark from this article. The author has told how few images of elder couple making theit BIG DAY are in agencies. It might be a tip for you :-) Have a great day - Ellen and all of you :-)

I am Dreamstime's Director of Content and Business Development. A long time stock industry professional, I have held executive positions at Corbis and Getty (Stone) as well as at several other large US agencies. Although I was given my first camera when I was six years old by my father, I gave up taking pictures when I became a photo editor. A lifetime of looking at the best work from some of the world's best photographers, made me realize my skills were in editing images, not taking them. My areas of expertise are content and business development.
