Take a Break, For Crying Out Loud!     posted on 26th of july, 2007

break, noun: a momentary halt in an activity (Merriam-Webster Online).

I hope you didn't really need this definition, but in case you had forgotten, this is what a break is. I'll elaborate more on that... and point out a few new things you can do today to make yourself and other people happy.

Today, take a break from your regular work, whether in photography or somewhere else, and spend some quality time with the people who love you - your spouse, kids, parents, friends, colleagues. Do something special and extraordinary for them - give an extra long hug; share a romantic kiss at a special place; cook their favorite meal, spiced with extra love. Send them a note or a letter... Now add flowers too. You can also print a photo, it's still in fashion... Don't forget to frame it!

Make sure you also take good care of your own body and health. Don't overwork - remember that you cannot make up for lost sleeping hours by sleeping extra long on Saturday. While you're preparing to go to bed don't get too busy with the latest and greatest of your wonderful ideas about photos you can take. Just go to bed! Inspiration will not cease tomorrow. As a matter of fact, when you're rested you're more likely to enter through the long-desired new gates of creativity. Better one better photo tomorrow, than five questionable ones tonight.

Read a book. Sadly enough the "digital" world closed half-way down the previously wide open window, which in first grade my teacher used to call "a book." Yet, the romance and relaxation found in reading a good book are still there, stronger than ever before. Oh, yes - touching the pages! Do you remember when was the last time you flipped pages not with a click but by hand? Nothing can substitute this feeling, and if you're having a bad day - maybe this will bring it a better ending. Read for leisure, not everything has to be work.

Eating food is an essential part of human existence. Therefore, eat! This might sound silly, but eating is probably one of the most neglected "breaks." Give yourself a healthy treat at work, at home, on the way... Eating just enough food every day will help you to be in a better physical, as well as mental condition, which will ultimately result in your better performance, not only in photography, but also in any other aspect of everyday living.

Now, if you really wondered why in the world would I write all this and you made it so far, then here's the answer: I simply believe that our level of satisfaction from life is highly dependable on loving others, loving ourselves, and loving even more.

And forgive me for being too cheesy, but this will certainly also raise your approval ratio as a contributor. :) Goes together with my previous thoughts on inspiration. My break time has come...

I totally agree. :) See, the thing is that when I talk about reading a book by default I mean a classical book. Some of them have what you mention too, but I see what you mean. Thanks for the note! :)

Perhaps you should add--read an OLD book. The new ones, novels at least, have nothing to do with leisure. They are all about anger, resentment, bitterness, envy, and control. They have to be "important." Yuck!

Thank you, Carmen! I'm very glad to hear you enjoy them. :) It's encouraging.

Ngo, you're welcome! Your image expressed exactly what I meant. It's full of rest and that old "book"-sort of romance. :)

    About Me
Petar Neychev (Petarneychev)
Sliedrecht, NL

I suppose it all started when my father got me to help him develop B&W negatives in a dark room at home. Then there followed a few years of wandering through my computer high-school. Later on the photo passion was awakened during a semester-long art class towards the end of my BA education in theology. Today I photograph stuff.

Although this will not become my life-long main occupation I'm determined to keep growing in it, because ultimately, it's about passion - you've got to do it for more than just the cash; you've gotta enjoy it far more beyond the expectations you have of the earnings page. Because these are not quite the things that enabled photographers for decades before you even saw a camera to go through the long process of recording moments.

My photo dream? That some day I'll be satisfied enough to allow myself to frame and hang on the wall one of my shots. And that I'll actually enjoy it being there.
