Being Your Own Model     posted on 12th of september, 2007

I'm currently living in an area of the country where I don't have many friends or family nearby. This makes expanding my portfolio to include more people shots a little more difficult than it might otherwise be but I'm trying to get in touch with my own "inner model."

I've never, ever been one to enjoy being in front of the camera, and I still don't. Adding to my own natural reluctance to step in front of the camera are the difficulties of trying to set up a shoot (sort of) with a model (sort of) who has to be in two places at once.

Lighting, focus, and well, all that important photography stuff is very difficult to get right when you're behind and in front of the camera.

Of course, after all that effort, I couldn't even fill out my own MR form correctly, but after my second try and many frustrations, I ended up with this image.

Can you see the aggravation?

In the meantime, if you don't have many people who will model for you or the money to pay someone to model, try stepping in front of the lens yourself. It can be scary, but you might find good results.

nicely done. What we should do is shoot pictures of ourselves and then send it to someone else for final editing. Is that allowable under Dreamstime rules?

Yes, the skin thing worried me, too.
I ended up using this tutorial (we'll see if the link works ;-)

I've been working up the courage to step in front of the camera myself. I have a cousin whom is almost 5 that LOVES being in front of the camera, but right now she is unable to do anything other than a big huge cheesey grin when she knows the camera is on her. :) We're working on it, though. :) Maybe in a couple of years, we'll get the facial muscles to cooperate. :)
As far as myself, I am my worst critic! I always find something wrong with squinty eyes, weird smile, something in my teeth, bad complexion, a pimple I can't remove from the image, or I just can't seem to get myself positioned in front of the camera right so I end up giving up.
