A helping hand for the newbies (part 15)

Do you remember when you first joined DT and you waited patiently for that first sale? I do! and I also remember the feeling of elation it brought with it. What I want to do is look at a portfolio with no sales, buy what i think is the best image in that portfolio and show it on a blog with 2 others from the same portfolio that I think should be worth a sale or two. The point of this series of blogs is to get the ball rolling for some of our newbies. So here is the 15th image I've bought from a newbie. His name is Lawrence Wee and he's from Singapore. I love the reflections and feeling of serenity of this photograph. Great shot Lawrence, well done. Here's two more from Lawrence's portfolio. Good luck with your Dreamstime career Lawrence.

Well, I have no reason to buy images outright.. But I am not against referring someone to the image If it might suit their purposes. But If I go that far to help a newbie, well, I dunno.. But they'd better either share, or recirprocate decently somehow.. If I buy a large image for download, I consider that a form of tipping.. But if I have to go out and find customers for them.. Well, then I'm more or less acting as an agent.. |

Well, it's a little bit sad. I gonna miss them. It was always interesting to see what you dig up. I really hope you got the joke in my previous post... You did a good think, and I'm pretty sure you made many photogs happy and motivated them. Best wishes! |

Well it appears that the dreamstime staff no longer find my series of helping hand for newbies articles worthy of any more free credits and with only one more credit remaining in my account i'm afraid the next article will probably be the last in the series? I joined dreamstime to make money not lose it. But i'm glad I managed to at least help out a few of the newbies in a short space of time. (even if it was only the small size I bought!!!) |

And of course the best thing you could do for newbies is to buy a full ownership of their photos for a couple of thousand dollars. That would be a real stimulus. ;)) |

I thought I might.. But my point isn't so much about me, as much as a general philosphy. I just mean, even when its not for me.. If someone new shows up, and you are trying to be nice to them.. then give them something they could technically put in their wallet, not something that jingles in their pocket.. And think of it this way, I will eventually return the favor and buy one of that person's images.. But it will be a small image too. Had they bought a large image, I would have returned the favor by doing the same.
The only reason I'm kind of complaining about it really is that I've done tech support for twelve years, and part of my job was that even though we closed at 9PM, if someone snuck in at 8:59, I still had to take that call, regardless of how difficult or how long it would last. We considered that to be part of our winning attitude.. But I hate when you go to some store, you're shopping for what you want, but they can't wait to kick you out at closing sharp.. That sort of gets my hackles up.. In a way that makes me feel like I did my part to help people out in this country, but when the time came to return the favor, I got the door slammed in my face. Usually when a store treats me that way.. I don't go back..
Imagine being a waitress who knows that your customers is a photographer.. If that customer is friendly and everything goes according to plan...who knows, maybe she'll use him for an event or project in the future.. But if he leaves a dime for her time on a $20 bill.. What do you think the chances of THAT happening are? Most waitresses work for tips and pretty much expect to make at least 15 per cent for their time and service and would probably not mind 20 per cent. I'm just saying, to me, If I think of taking that photo, editing, and uploaoding it like waitressing, getting .60 doesn't seem like I got a 15 per cent tip. I will eventually pay it on, and help other newbies.. But it wouldn't feel right to me to click on small or even medium.. Just call it a personal quirk... |

Sounds like you're a bit ungrateful? Keep uploading and get your portfolio up to at least a couple of hundred images and all those 'little' downloads will start adding up and then I don't think you'll be complaining as much? This game is as much about patience as it is about creating and selling great images. |

I know I'm new here, and barely have any images ok'd for my uploads (potentially 16 are on the way over the next 1.5 days.) And maybe I am being a greedy newbie. But someone "helped me out" by purchasing a download, but then they went with the smallest size? I'm not so much complaining.. I really do appreciate it.. But really.. If you are going to help someone out.. Don't do it half way.. At least buy the largest download. Put a few bucks in their pocket.. Not .60 cent. I mean, if I pass a street person, I put at least a dollar in their hat.. And I've put as much as a 5 if they were really good. If I go to a restaraunt, I always tip the higher of $1 or 15 per cent.
I know I can't twist anyone's arm.. But don't you think if you were in a service related industry (and this IS one) that you'd want to walk away from any situation feeling as if it was worth it? Maybe its me, and I might not have a full understanding of this industry, but I DO know that I didn't upload a 3 Mpixel or higher edited image without my watermark in hopes that I'd make .60 a pop.. |

I think I am going to go on and add that picture of the pears to a lightbox for download later. It'll look really nice in our bedroom next to a b&w image from our wedding -- it's of us siloquetted by a stained glass window, leaning toward each other to kiss. I think it'll set the mood nicely. =D |

I was actually thinking about it. :) I have a couple of credits, still, but I'm waiting to see how much wall space we are going to have after we're done "unloading" from our reception this past weekend! My mother-in-law blew-up a bunch of the photos from the ceremony, and now she doesn't know what to do with them. I only want one of them, but I have a feeling more will migrate toward us... That and I have a few shadow boxes to create now. :) Why stuff things like our champagne flutes and other fancy trinkets into a box? Boxes take up too much space. I say, UTILIZE THE WALL!! =) |

That's a really nice approach to helping the newer people here. Thanks for the idea. Now I've just got to setup a blog as well (although I already have several elsewhere). But as a newbie here I think blogging about what works and what doesn't could be useful.
I've already sold my first. One of my favorite shots over Granite Mountain here in Arizona. Now I need to start putting some more photos up (slow start). :) |
