Hunt for your own photos on the net.     posted on 25th of september, 2007

Every contributor here on DT wants to know how and where his/her photos were used. There is even a special thread on the Message Boards (DT in action) Because I've just discovered one of my images being used in an article, I posted a thread there too.

First have a read here.

...then let me tell how I found it.

1. I put my full name in quotas and ran Google search.

2. Then search among the search results (yes, it's another searching, cause every query brings many results, some are useless)

3. If you are lucky, and a designer/publisher credited you, you're on your way to finding You in action

4. Perform that search regularly, you will then see better if/when new results show up.

It's a fine feeling when you see one of yours published:)

Ok, now I figured out how it works. Since my main search engine is Google, it brought me right away to the Google page, that's why I didn't notice the difference at first glimpse. Thanks for the link! And sorry Sebastian for stealing your thread... :~-

It use to be, but lately Yahoo! and Google seem to be doing their best to see that they bring up different hits specifically because people think their isn't a difference. And Live usually comes up with different stuff than both.. As an alternative to metasearch, I also look up stuff on Ask.com. The funny thing is, I sometimes see links up to images of mine on a hosting site that I have not been on in 2 years now.. If you notice in my tags, I always include my name and handle, and city.. Already I am seeing some of my images show up on Google and Yahoo! Its just a shame the tagging system doesn't allow phrase grouping.. I'd include my studio name.. But without phrase grouping, that would just be SPAM. I also do some acting on the side. So I always hope that using both my real name and handle for Photography and Acting will generate spill over from each audience..

Hmm, Brian, but it uses Google's search engine? So, in reality, just google - that's all you need... ;)

I've been doing this for years. Its called an ego search.. I usually search "Brian Egendorf", MainFragger, and then "Brian Egendorf" MainFragger. A good tool to use is http://www.metasearch.com because it stores info for multiple search engines.. Its like visiting Google, Yahoo!, Live, and Alta Vista all at the same time. And you can tell it to look for images and videos of yours specifically..

Haha, yes, you might have thought that, that's the author's name right under the photo :)

I checked your photo on the CityLine website and... that's a little bit embarrassing... for a second I thought, that your other name is Nancy LePatourel. LOL... too funny... Then of course I saw the credit line at the end of article with your name. I have found some of my photos "in action" and it's a nice feeling to see them on webpages or newspapers. Wish you more such finds!

Great ideas well stated.

:)) Good. It runs pretty amazingly. I'm not sure it catches every time every keyword you put into alerts, but it seems to me that it is quite efficient. Google robots are everywhere. :))
Comment by Sebcz on September 25, 2007
...and this is why I love you guys! I've never heard of that google feature before:) Thanks Maigi, I ran my own alert just now.
Comment by Maigi on September 25, 2007
And the easiest way to track your photos is to build up a Google alert (http://www.google.com/alerts). So you will get notified every time your photo will appear online. :)

Good point. There are obviously names which would return more results, then U need to be creative in narrowing the search criteria.
Comment by Thefinalmiracle on September 25, 2007
thats hard for me! search for my name and you will know why!?!? some other tag helps which goes this way -

"" + "©" + "dreamstime"

the quotes are important
