New to Portraits

Lately I've been wanting to try my eye at some portraits of people. I am relatively new to photography (about one year) and am only 16 so I was wanting to see how bad I would end up making the person look.
Thankfully, I have good access to models with my family. I asked my sister and she was willing to let me try. I had read a few articles on taking portraits, I had seen a gnarled tree that looked like a good background, and there was a nice, soft, cloudy afternooon so I decided to go ahead and try. I was very pleased with the results of the about 25 pictures I took that time.
After a little bit of photshop, I was ready to see what Dreamstime would think of them. I guessed they liked them because a few days later, the four I had uploaded were online. I probably have the worst acceptance ratio on dreamstime at about 10% (I'm not bragging) so I was quite happy with the results. You can let me know what you think as well.
Anyhow, the point of me writing this is that I want to encourage you to try your eye at what is new to you too. With a little practice of how to see the light, you will start seeing results. I hope I encouraged you that if such a new and ameteur photographer can take a half good picture, perhaps you can take an actually good picture. Also, if you don't mind, I would appreciate your thoughts on how I could do better if you have anything (I'm sure you will :) ). Gabe

Thanks for the comment and suggestion. I agree with you. However, with the time I took these pictures, my goal was to see how I did taking peoples portraits not for micro stock. It was only a minor goal to get them on here. The next time I do another shoot with a model, I will try to incorporate your ideas. By the way, more have been uploaded and accepted. Gabe

Very nice. The only suggestion I have is one I need to work on myself, take photos of your models doing something or with an expression other than smiling at the camera. Photos of people in action or with maybe a sad, angry, scared expression seem to sell better.

>I believe, with Francis Schaeffer, that there are "Four Standards of Judgement" that must be applied to every work of art: Excellence (well done technically); Validity (the artist is true to himself and not fooling the viewer); Content (the artwork genuinely reflects the worldview of the artist); and Integration (a strong correlation between style and content).
If you use one of my pictures, I would really appreciate it if you would let me know where it is because I would love to see my work in use. Thanks!
