Making Flash Not Look Like Flash     posted on 12th of october, 2007

Wow!
What a great site: flash photography techniques!

Neil van Niekerk shares his knowledge about lighting techniques. A lot of good tips and examples!

I discovered it today for myself and couldn't help but post this link here too.

About Neil van Niekerk

Neil van Niekerk was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, before emigrating to the United States with his family in 2000. As a photographer in South Africa, he worked with a select number of clients, including Dogzbodys and PictureNET Africa (one of the largest photo agencies in South Africa).

Neil now lives in New Jersey with his wife and daughter, and is a full time professional photographer. He has photographed weddings and portraits across the United States and internationally and his work can be seen on his website at One Perfect Moment. Neil is even more well known for his Planet Neil website (described by Rangefinder as "an unusual and informative web site dedicated to digital imaging.") where he publishes articles on lighting and technique.

"I love photography for a variety of reasons. The stimulation and excitement of responding to new situations satisfies both my analytical and creative sides, and I also truly love working with people. I get real pleasure from sharing the happiness with the people that I photograph, and knowing that I’m creating images that will evoke wonderful memories for a lifetime."

:) I don't have a real flash yet, only pop up flash. And just like you, I try to avoid any circumstances, where flash is needed. I have learned a lot of tips and tricks to keep my camera steady and use natural light. But always it's just not possible. Since I have Canon, I have thought about Speedlite 580EX II, but ring flashes also have caught my attention. So, I'm not decided yet, what's best for me. Neil's site is an inspiration, what forces me to make up my mind faster. ;)

Wow the link to Neil's site is excellent. Makes me tired ... more to learn. What kind of flash do you use? I only use what my camera has (D70) and hate all the evidence of a flash being used. I am beginning to search for a 'real' flash.
