Time - a double edged sword in photography     posted on 1st of october, 2007

A time as simple as it can get, is your friend and also your foe.

An intangible factor, an asset or liability?

To me, time is essential in photography not just about getting shots done within a given time but more specifically, working for time.

Time is limited, time is recycled every 24hrs, but every recycling is a totally different scenario.

Capturing the moment, that is time. Freezing a sporting athlete in his motion, that is time.

Some moments just come and go and if we are not quick enough, we lose a great shot say for example during actual daywedding photography.

Yet, sometimes we make time work for us. Time depicts the period of a day. We understand time and we make the most out of it.

Waking up early and knowing sunrise comes only at a certain ...

Extracting from a scene a stock photograph     posted on 2nd of october, 2007

I am not sure how many people out there belong to the same boat as I do. I don't have strobe lights, models, studio to work with.

My main source of stock photograph are plucked off the street during my street shoots. Namely landscape, street abstracts and maybe some macro shots.

Like mentioned earlier in my previous article "stock minded - boon or bane", I have problems now finding my passion which is now lost in the sea of stock photography. Sometimes, all that I am shooting is something which I feel should qualify as a stock photograph.

One might think that a simple street shot can be taken in its rawest form and presented as a stock photograph. I have to disagree.

Besides getting the right natural light which we have no control over it, we have to select the best angle to shoot ...

i believe that time spent finding your happy medium is your practice to NEAR perfection since no one is perfect. Good luck to you too!~ By the way the photos are credited to Lawrence Wee, not my shot =p - posted by Fertographer on October 02, 2007
Thank you, and I agree totally with you. I'm in the same boat. It really gets confusing to the psyche sometimes! Then, you try to upload photographs that don't quite fit the bill, and "stock" that isn't composed properly. I'm having a heck of a time finding the "happy medium" so to speak. But, "quitter" has NEVER been my middle name, so I'll keep plugging along. Eventually, I'll have to get something right! :D Good shot, by the way! - posted by Cmarshall717 on October 02, 2007

Photography - are you appreciating?     posted on 2nd of october, 2007

Photography is an art, correct and yes.

We appreciate what is around us that is why we take photographs of them.

However, I realise that in the process of achieving the final product and art piece, we lose the instantaneous appreciation of the subject.

For example,

Shooting sports photography, while trying to get that 'emotional' shots of the players' expression and action, we lose knowledge of the whole gameplay.

Shooting a dance concert indoor, we capture beautiful postures and poses for later appreciation but we paid the tickets to shoot and not enjoy the play as a sequence.

Shooting macro of insects, our eyes look near, never looking far and appreciating the environment.

The moment I saw this peacock I whipped out my camera, but have I even hesitated ...

haha perhaps you got me wrong. I am not complaining or whining, its something i realise about myself. I am a photographer by pure passion and a hobbyist one. I'm writing this article to raise awareness that sometimes we need to take a break from that intensive shooting. =) - posted by Fertographer on October 03, 2007
So sad than don't be a photographer, this is the profession, the joy and hard-work as a photographer but do you notice that a photographer always got the best view than no other people have, yet you complain . - posted by Mailthepic on October 02, 2007
haha i understand what you mean, of course you ought to know and expect what can happen example when is a soccer player going to kick a ball. Yet on the ground, you lose the opportunity of being a spectator and seat back to admire the game. As a photographer shooting away, you've got to constantly think and expect what can happen so that you can snap, also looking out for when the ball might come your camera's way. That's what I meant =) - posted by Fertographer on October 02, 2007

War seen through a photograph and video     posted on 4th of october, 2007

I was thinking about the world war movies when this thought struck me about some difference between photography and video on the world war. Of course besides world war, we can relate this two subjects together almost frequently to always if its news related.

Having seen black and white clips and movies of war, it showed cruelty and gore. It shows how the story unfolds and how progress was made with each passing second.

On the other yet, a photograph brought about a more engaging interaction between the viewer and itself albeit being a silent witness of the event.

When being shown a documentary, the viewer is lead to follow the sequential events that unfold and at the same time thinks a bit of the events why and how it happens. Sometimes the answer are provided in the clip itself....

photo blogs     posted on 5th of october, 2007

People of the past wrote diaries, I remember during my primary school days, there were cute diaries that came with locks. So much for the secrecy back then.

Next came along blogs, taking the world by storm, creating 'full time jobs' for some, changing the world with individualistic perspectives from every corner. Blogs became an in-thing.

Now, photography has taken a big leap in terms of dominating blogs - photo blogs, photo journals.

Like they always say, a picture speaks a thousand words. Some people on the popular photo sharing website www.flickr.com adheres to a self imposed rule of having a photo taken everyday. They tag this event as 365days.

Everyday a photograph will represent their day, their mood, their expressions. Some see it in as a picture of themselves, some uses ...

Withdrawal symptoms     posted on 6th of october, 2007

I haven't been shooting for a week.. and its getting my fingers itching very badly and i am serious about it.

I thought today was a salvation. My school's club had organised an outing to the botanical gardens for a group walkabout shoot. Well I had work and had to be there by 3pm but the outing's 9am to 1pm and I can always leave early right?

On my way, I got called up even before I reach. Last minute changes and they told me I have to report at 12pm...

Argh, I was contemplating here and there. I reached the place and met my fellow members I tried as much as I wanted to stay. It only got the better of me as the thought of the time I have left to sufficiently reach home, get changed and get to work...

The painful decision came...

Sometimes its so disheartening to have such events ...

Photojournalists, the frontline warriors who bring us news     posted on 6th of october, 2007

I read up recently about kevin carter after viewing some pictures that were from all over the world, depicting conflict, atrocities, cruelty and sadness.

Those photos, mainly in black and white, captured the essence of humanity and that so many parts of the world is lacking or have not any respect for it.

Images of children and woman, their eyes reflecting the conflict and damage they seen, dirt on their faces, going against riot police etc. They only showed us how comfortable we are seated in front of our computers now.

Our counterparts on the other hand, are the ones who risk their lives charging in front of roaring protesters, in the middle of a gunbattle as well as many other engaging activities that would otherwise take their lives like any other.

The article that struck ...

Outdoor photography can be as challenging as a sport     posted on 7th of october, 2007

Photography to some seems like a simple job to hold the camera and snap away. Perhaps to third parties who are not proficient in photography themselves.

However, little did they know what photographers do outdoor can be challenging if not as tired as some exercises.

It is always best to travel light if we're travelling that is to say however, in order to achieve the photos we desire and the photos we aim to create, sometimes it is necessary to bring all the important (and heavy) gears along.

On top of carrying the weight throughout the journey or trip, the neck straps and bag straps really creates a burden for the shoulders and neck.

Sometimes when I'm shooting macro, all the bending and squatting down can be tiresome as well.

While looking for insects and macro subjects, I had ...

I can only envy that you people got great opportunities out there to explore. Perhaps when i'm older and have a career to sponsor my travel, i'll definitely find time to go africa, the wildlife really looks amazing - posted by Fertographer on October 09, 2007
Hi there , Try the above , and then couple it trying to photograph African wildlife ! From a vehicle is just as hard , as you are limited in your luck in having good light falling on your subject , and usually no way to fix it if its behind etc . Nothing more rewarding than getting it right though :) . - posted by Bucky_za on October 09, 2007
i got to say yours are more extreme than mine! a pity my country is alittle small to have any place to trek nor climb!~ Unless i venture out to overseas! =p - posted by Fertographer on October 08, 2007

Death Paparazzi     posted on 13th of october, 2007

I read abit on The Staits Times today, the national newspaper for Singapore. Its rather disturbing to read about the death of princess Diana and the enquiries that has followed. The causes are still unknown and unsure.

All that is confirmed is the death of a member of a royal family but that seems like of mere secondary importance.

Images after images are reported and used as evidence all in the search for the real answer but that has raised the concern on the issue about morality of photographers.

Should the paparazzi behaved as they had, in such a frantic car chase? Or was it purely the intention of a plot to cause the death as reported?

I mean, what is so great about having some photographs of Princess Diana with someone else, is the value of the photograph so worthy to the photographer ...

Canon photo marathon     posted on 26th of october, 2007

Well i recently took part in Canon photo marathon Singapore competition. Its a challenge whereby we have to accept a theme and then get the photo within 3 hours including downloading to the organising committee's computer before the time limit. Only after which the second theme is released to us till the third theme.

It was a great experience but dull at the same time. My friend and I cracked our brain so hard our brain juice leaked out but that was not all. We just couldn't get a good idea of what to shoot. Many of what we could do was already thought of by the others. We also expected many people to shoot the same things which turned out that way.

Our theme was Passion, Challenge and finally Playtime. Of course within time limits its really a challenge and it was hard to find a picture ...

Assignment theme... Uniquely Singapore for the rest of the world     posted on 28th of october, 2007

A topic that I am always grumbling about and complaining that my little country has little to offer in terms of unique features and cultures. However, that is only subjected to photography. I'm definitely proud to be a Singaporean!

Anyway, to all foreigners who wish to know a little bit more of Singapore's street level dark secrets...read on

To me, Singapore is unique in its people, people of all races and religion. On top of having top and first class organizations owned by the country such as Singapore Airlines and the port which is one of the busiest in the world. The Singapore Night Safari is the first in the world but nothing to boast of nor is it the merlion being a hybrid of lion and mermaid which is nothing more than an icon and nothing else significant of.

Singaporeans have ...

I'm one who likes to shoot things around us that we usually take for granted. I take this opportunity to present the these subjects as stock photos. You might have seen them but have not took a second glance at them. I have them here for you :)
