I saw Richard St. John's video on TED.com today, where he talked about eight secrets of success. This talk is from 2005, but nothing seems to be changed in those 3 years. :) St. John mentioned 8 traits, what help us to succeed in our lives. And I think they apply to stock photography as well, or even best. So I wanted to share them with you. 1. PASSION I have ever met a passionless photographer, not a professional, and much less a hobbyist. So it's easy to keep passion about photography alive when there's so much beauty around us and interesting subjects and lot of techniques to explore and develop. Maybe you need to find your passion among different genres or ... [ Read more... ]

... the Sun. Are you living in Arctic Canada, Greenland, Svalbard, Franz Josef Land, Central Russia, China or Mongolia? If yes, then you have a great chance to follow the total eclipse of the Sun on August 1st, 2008! All others of us, in northeastern North America, Europe and Asia can admire this wonder only partially. So, what to do to be prepared? 1. Check times and locations If you are living some kilometers away from eclipse path, make a jaunt with friends or family to see the full performance. 2. Prepare your camera Use the longest telephoto lens you have, find or rent a tele-converter. If you can achieve 1000 mm focal length, it's good. 2000 mm would be better :). Do some test photosessions. Don't forget your tripod! A ... [ Read more... ]

Sad to hear, Pete, you had such a bad experience. :( But it's so true, that animals can't appreciate the beauty of total eclipse, but instead go panic, cause something is totally different from what they have used to see. Just like we, humans... when something is very different than we have used to think or see, we start to feel endangered. But maybe that's the good quality. Sustaining at least... :) Hey, thanks for your good wishes. Can't wait tomorrow... - posted by

Looking at sun the through my special glasses I missed my dog who was in a panic at the eclipse and she ran into my tripod and down we all went. The fun side of photography I don't think, best of luck with your eclipse. Pete - posted by

:) No, Linqong, I'm not an astronomer. I just love to follow astronomical phenomenons - they are very interesting. And they give a great proof of how brilliantly our life system is designed. My favorite astronomical phenomenons are sunsets. :) Yeah, just sunsets, which occur every day, but which are also different every day. So, they are really not JUST sunsets... :) Well, Linqong, I do envy you a little bit. ;) I would love to be in China on Friday... So, let us know, when your photos are ready! :) - posted by

"It's raining... Again... Every time I have a little spare time, the weather decides not to cooperate and turns against me. What can I do?! All my plans for a whole day shooting ended up in smoke (or rain?)... Life sucks..." Have you ever thought such thoughts? Have you been unhappy when it has been raining cats and dogs, while you have planned a sunny day photosession? If yes, then it shouldn't be that you just let the unpredictable weather to ruin your happy moments with your camera. How not to let that happen? There might be some ideas for you. 1. Go out, find a lobby or carport or some other dry place and take rainy day photos, people with umbrellas, struggling with their everyday life, rushing across the street. ... [ Read more... ]

I have to start with an observation about complaints what occur occasionally on stock photography sites: "Somebody stoled my keywords - please, stop it!", "How can I prevent others from copying my keywords?", "Keywords copied - is it right?!" Well, from legal wiewpoint - there's no law about words copyright. "Titles, names, short phrases, and slogans; familiar symbols or designs; mere variations of typographic ornamentation, lettering, or coloring; mere listings of ingredients or contents" are NOT eligible for federal copyright protection, stands on webpage of the U.S. Copyright Office. I do not know English enough. And when I select keywords I look similar images. I never copy everything but so I study English that in the future to not address any more to search. Because very difficultly not knowing it is very good English to pick up keywords. Itself I can pick up no more than 8 words. And in general if copy work very good means. In fact great artists are copied much also by them do not take offence. Always it is necessary to think the head. To study at others, instead of to copy. - posted by

On May 2nd, 2008 Internet newsfeeds asked: What do Estonian Tech Millionaires do for Fun? The answer was: They find and digitally map 10,000 tons of garbage. Then they get 40,000 of their closest friends to clean it all up in one single day. On Saturday, May 3rd all of that came into reality - Estonians joined forces in an effort to clean up the 45,227 km² country from illegally dumped or littered waste. 50,000 volunteers, which is about 3.8% of population of Estonia, gave their hands and gathered thousands of tons of garbage. Clean-up campaign "Teeme ära!" (Let's Do It!) was led by one of the Skype inventors, Ahti Heinla, and the founder of Microlink and Delfi, Rainer Nõlvak, who used own-created innovative software based on Google ... [ Read more... ]

They say: "Photography is all about lighting". And it's true. How many times I have experienced truth of the words "No light - no photo". But... is there any place in the world, were at some moment is absolutely no light? Maybe only if you lock yourself in some airtight, crackless room. But usually there's always light. Maybe sometimes just too little, but it is. So... where's light, there can be a photo. I discovered a site what unites nocturnal photographers from all around the world. It calls The Nocturnes: www.thenocturnes.com There are fantastic galleries with nocturnal photos and lot of tips for night photography. ... [ Read more... ]

It's official now - PayPal works in Estonia! In September 2007 PayPal announced that PayPal started to offer account balance withdrawals to Visa-branded credit, debit, or prepaid cards in 26 international markets. Listed new countries were: Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Cyprus, Estonia, Gibraltar, Iceland, Indonesia, India, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Philippines, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, UAE, and Uruguay. Yesterday I received my first payment via PayPal. Due to my ignorance it took almost 3 weeks, but after discussing with my local bank office and clarifying needed procedures, next time it will be couple of days, like it should be. ... I'll be with my family in Gran Canaria next month and I was wondering maybe someone can suggest me some great nature locations in the southern part of the island? Some great tips what to pay attention when shooting on sandy beaches would be useful too. How to protect camera? Any suggestions? Or location hints? I hope there will be good weather then, not too hot I guess. How to avoid harsh shadows, when sun is always brightly shining? But mostly would love to hear about some beautiful nature spots where you never get with the tourist guide. Any locals here? Or stationary visitors? Can't wait to get away from that dark winter... ... [ Read more... ]

I think this photo should be a cover photo candidate of a catering or cooking magazine. It has so many qualities that makes a cover photo. It's eye catching, it's funny and smart, it has great colors, lovely lighting. It is clear and simple, but not too much. It has selective focus. It tells a story. It has copy space for text. It is with portrait orientation. It missed some keywords, but now they are added. I just can imagine it on some magazine's front page. How it comes that it has over 6000 views, but not a single download?

Eti, I am grateful you gave that explanation! To pay attention to work ethics (if this is a right word in English) didn't came to my mind. I just thought it's a great ACTION shot - you can see how chef is struggling to get dinner ready, great expression on his face. And I like the angle of camera very much. That didn't came to my mind to pay attention on other details you brought up. Great lesson for me - to be precise in small details, what seem to be unimportant, but are important enough to influence aesthetic appeal of a photo. Thank you very much! - posted by

EVEN though you don't need an explaination... I must. I think the image is excellent for all the right photographic reasons but my first impression of the person wiping their hands on their head while preparing a bird, is .... well it just isn't appealing. For me it is an image for what not to do when cooking. I work at a school that has a culinary department if that helps with where my perspective comes from. - posted by
