Canon G9 - first impressions     posted on 19th of december, 2007

I was thinking about buying a new camera some tim eago, as an add-on to my Pentax k100d dslr.

Canon G9.

Well, I've made up my mind and bought it.

Now I've been testing it intensively, some photos are in my queue waiting for approval.

I love it for its compactness, RAW ability, manual operations available (including focus), incredible macro distance (1 cm!) It has a flash hot shoe, I can easily use my wireless flash with it, shweeet.

Well, it won't be a dslr ever - high ISO's (400 and above) are practically (well, for stock photo) useless because of the noise. U can deal with it somehow, using your noise reduction software, still it;s much better at low ISO's. Knowing that, you'll be on your way to make the most of that small wonder.

Did I mention a tank-like solid build ?

[imgr]4954442[/imgr]Hi! I bought a G9 one month ago, with a waterproof case.
I'm very happy because of this digital camera, I made beautiful pictures of flowers with my G9. I also noticed that going above 400 ISO will introduce a lot of noise in the picture.
After this august I will upload underwater picture from G9.

I am also looking forward to a G9... Maybe in April... Until then, I am the happy user of a G7, which lacks RAW ability and only has 10MP.

Yeah, it is a lot of fun. It has a lot of great features, too. If you haven't done so already, sit down with the camera in your lap and the manual in the other. :)

Superb shots, Teresa! I am sure I will enjoy G9 just the same :)

I bought a G9 not long ago and love it! I keep it in my purse and carry it with me. It's great for going to birthday parties. I can take nice photos and don't have to drag around my DSLR. :) Did you know you can even buy telephoto lenses for the G9? I also bought a waterproof case so I can do underwater photography. :) We have a 5-year-old fish for a cousin, and I'm thinking really funny pictures for the family! It also does a wonderful job of creating stock photos, even in higher ISOs. But you are right about going above 400. Just be careful, and shoot in the RAW when you can. I have taken the following photos with my G9 that have been uploaded and accepted as stock, from beads, snipers, and decks: 3623858, 3623791, 3489066, 3489045, 3391435, 3391420, 3391409, 3391368.

The sweet thing about 12MP is that when you have issues with noise (after using high ISO's) you can still downsize to, say, 3MP - the quality improves dramatically. Oh. and I have my first g9 approved :[imgl]3877840[/imgl]

I am also juggling whether to buy a Canon 400D or G9. Obviously logically speaking I should have atleast 1 D-SLR, but I think that the camera MP battle will rest down and companies will concentrate more on the functionality and other features of the camera next year. SO I am still waiting! or maybe an SR-EL Sale would help...!! hehehhe.. didn't have even a single EL Sale since long! :(

Hello! The Canon G9 is also on my "Christmas-Wish-List". I am looking for a high-quality-compact-camera and I think, the G9 is the best choice at this time. And this camera saves the pictures in RAW..... this is one of the strongest arguments for me. By the way: I wish a peaceful christmas and a healthy new year!

Good to hear because the G9 is number one on my wish list for Christmas. I've been using a Nikon D80 and it's just too big to fit into my purse for those "Kodak" moments that I've found my best pictures come from. I will watch for your photos.
