Portable studio?     posted on 31st of january, 2008

I'm quite interested in getting into more product stock photography rather than my usual landscape/sunset kinda thing and I was wondering if anyone can suggest a relatively cheap light box/tent or a portable studio set up? Needs to be quite small as I don't have that much room!

I've looked at various options and they seem to range in price from £30 - £300 so it would be great if you have any ideas. I may even try making my own as described in dabobabo's blog, but I am not the most handy of people!

Cheers!

First of all, thanks for using my photo in your blog :)
Second, there are some tutorials online which show you how you can create your own lightbox for around £10. You can find it if you search for it on google.
You can always try to create one and see how it works for your, if that is what you are trying to achieve. And for £10 it's always worth trying :)
Good luck!

There is however a limitation which I forgot to mention. If you shoot something with reflective surfaces then the light tent is the only solution as everything in your living room/garage,etc would be visible :). Even so you can save the day with some post-processing, clone stamp and healing tool are your friends.

From my short experience I can tell you that it isn't worth investing in a light tent. A white wall and a big sheet of paper is better. I have a tent and just sits unused, while I take my shots using a big sheet of paper taped to the wall to create the infinite perspective. Take a look at my portfolio, all the recent images are done that way. As for the light I use 2 small servo flashes (very cheap), an umbrella, a white cloth for softening the light and all kinds of other artifices as I don't have money for proper lights yet. Imagination is your only limit :)
