One step closer to turning pro     posted on 4th of february, 2008

Tomorrow I'm doing something that will take me a step closer to becoming a professional microstock contributor. A big step.

Turning professional is about getting your microstock earnings above the cost of the lifestyle you want to have as a pro. The key is in looking at both sides of that comparison. (no, that's NOT me in the photo!)

While we all strive to increase our earnings, the prospect of doing something we love as our primary source of income (full time) might be worth a few lifestyle sacrifices. Thus, reducing your cost of living can get you to 'pro' status sooner.

If you're extremely fortunate, like me, you get to make a change you're happy about that also reduces your living expenses. So tomorrow, I'm moving from Australia to Argentina. The exchange rate between the Argentinean Peso and the US dollar is greater than between the Australian dollar and the US dollar. In short, it's cheaper to live in Argentina. And while I love Australia, I'm in love with the Argentinean lifestyle and very excited about moving.

So what lifestyle sacrifices would be worth making if it meant you could become a pro microstocker?

Congratulations for following your dream! As far as I'm concerned I have to agree with Jay here, and we don't have any pets. Not to mention that we had barely settled here in Canada.
To answer your question, I would gladly give up a few vacations to invest the money in equipment.
Good luck with your move and keep us posted.

WOW! That IS a big step! I don't think my wife, four kids, dog, cat, and mouse would travel well to another country. That is a HUGE step! Via con Dios!

Wow, that is exciting! You should get some great pictures... The places that I would want to live (Nice, Rome) aren't cheap so we probably won't make that move. But, I look forward to seeing your career take off! Right now I'm just trying to make a few sales and learn something about stock photography.
