Flickr vs Picasa, Concluded     posted on 5th of february, 2008

First, thanks to everyone who provided commentary on my dilemma of signing up with Flickr vs Picasa. I gave both a test drive, and really liked each. Flickr seems unbeatable for community-based features, and I have a feeling its traffic is off the charts. On the other hand, Picasa is extremely clean and straightforward in design, and the integration into Google is very handy.

In the end, though, I decided to think outside the box (as the saying goes), and signed up with Smugmug. In the beginning of this process, I knew very little about Smugmug, but after a couple days on the site, I was hooked. The design elements are really great looking, going from professional to whimsical. Customizability is outstanding, too. What sealed the deal, for me: Smugmug offers easy ...

Hey--If you do decide to go with Smugmug let me know first. I think that if you enter my email when you sign up, you might get a discount (maybe $5 off--I don't know the details). - posted by Charlesoutcalt on February 07, 2008
I haven't heard of it either - will have a look. Hope you enjoy it though! - posted by Cleaper on February 05, 2008

Worth Every Penny     posted on 8th of february, 2008

I have been debating the purchase of the Canon 300 mm f2.8L IS for a while now. I finally took the plunge (I wish I had stock in B&H!).

So far, I could not be happier. I've had just a few opportunities to see what it can do, but the clarity is unrivaled, at least in my experience. In fact, sometimes I see almost too much detail. Check out the dandruff on this cormorant

For subjects without dandruff (and even for those that do!), the level of detail I can capture is opening up new possibilities. I had always admired the art deco tiles on this condo building, but didn't know how to capture them.

It's NOT all about the gear, but sometimes a lens is so useful it makes the job much, much easier. Now, I just need to find a good chiropractor ...

Thanks, but I can't take full credit! Most of that has to go to the fine engineers at Canon and Gitzo. . . - posted by Charlesoutcalt on February 11, 2008
Great detail on these shots! - posted by Cleaper on February 11, 2008
I'm a one-lens girl... simplifies things when it comes to carrying gear. I have a Sigma 18-200 which is really fun to use. - posted by Amyemilia on February 10, 2008

Keywording Service     posted on 11th of february, 2008

Taking a tip from another Dreamstimer (thanks, KenneyStudios!), I submitted a few images for full keywording. I was a little skeptical at first, thinking 'How could they know my photos better than I do?'

Well, I am officially hooked on this service. The keyworders have come up with many, many more descriptive terms that I have on my own. They have a fresh eye for the photo, and it seems to help them envision more themes and uses than I had in mind when I created the image. I won't embarrass myself by showing how limited my own keywording is, but check out the great job they did on these photos.

Pamela, I am officially hooked. I am reluctant now to submit images without this service. I checked out your photos--very nice! I like the macros. I noticed, though, that there might be a few keywords you are missing. On this image, for example, how about golden brooch pin jewel jewelry gem locket? I think these are all appropriate, and would in no way be keyword 'spam.' [imgl]4236907[/imgl] Darn--the image is not appearing in this message. I am referring to your ID number 4236907, of the heart-shaped pin with the pearl. - posted by Charlesoutcalt on February 12, 2008
Glad to hear this service works. I have been wondering and waiting to hear what more were saying and to see some examples. Thanks for providing the information and the examples. I feel I will now give the service a try when i am having a problem with keywording. Thanks!!! - posted by Pamtriv on February 12, 2008
I hear you, but sometimes I find the keywording most valuable when I feel TOO familiar with the subject. I love having a set of fresh eyes on an image. All around, a highly useful service--and a bargain, too. - posted by Charlesoutcalt on February 11, 2008

Beginning a Collection     posted on 11th of february, 2008

I know that some old hands on Dreamstime are very familiar with collections, but I have just discovered this feature and created my first collection.

As I was searching Dreamstime, I realized that it is much easier to find images of Christian houses of worship than images of sites and buildings representing other religious traditions. As a college instructor in world religions, I thought it might be helpful for users to have a collection of houses of worship from different faith traditions. And so:

I encourage everyone with images of houses of worship from around the world to add to this collection. I know there are some terrific images out of there of temples, mosques, gurdwaras,...

I'm not sure why the photos didn't come through... just do a search on Paestum and you will see the photos. There aren't very many. - posted by Amyemilia on March 17, 2008
Hi Charles... I've got several shots of the temples at Paestum that been accepted, which you might consider for your collection: [imgl]4358879[/imgl] [imgl]4358970[/imgl] This one isn't mine, but I do think it would fit: [imgl]819849[/imgl] - posted by Amyemilia on March 17, 2008
Thanks, Linqong. I will look forward to adding your images to the collection! - posted by Charlesoutcalt on February 24, 2008
