Stuck in a Box     posted on 7th of february, 2008

Do you ever get the feeling that you are stuck in a never-ending cycle of clichés and stereotypes? If you do, then you might be an In-house Graphic Designer.

Yes that's right, If you, like me, once dreamed of that awesome job in the creative world, where you and high end magazine publishers would rub shoulders, and have the ability to tell some of the best photographers in the industry that there shot doesn't look quite right for the ad for Nike, you too would have been struck with a large dose of reality upon graduation from the creative school of your choice.

Reality hit me, and it hit hard. I graduated in early October of 2001, literally three weeks after September 11th, and one of our nations biggest tragedies. The only people that showed ...

Ha, I totally understand. I wish I could be creative in a more free environment. But to be honist, it pays the bills, and it is better then washing cars, working at Walmart, or pushing papers in some office. It's good that you get a chance to be creative. Your photos are quite nice. I am sure that you will do well on this sight. Have a great day! Sarah - posted by Torchdesigns on February 12, 2008
Really nice blog - interesting stuff! I come from a family of graphic designers and they too seem to be disillusioned in this changed world of 'design' - it's not at all like it used to be. I also work in the business but supplying to ad agencies - again, there doesn't seem to be much creativity or glamour involved! That's why I love taking photographs - it's my creative time. I am realizing though, since I am new to stock photography, that it is a challenge to think less about the creativity and think more about what the designer needs...still it's better than being in the office! - posted by Cleaper on February 11, 2008
Very good insight. Yes I was an in house designer for several years. Many of the youngsters who enter the graphics design field think they will be doing "cool" stuff all the time, As you know, it ain't all that! It's delivering for the needs of your employer, and most of the time it isn't very glamorous :-) Love your work. - posted by Niagaragirl on February 08, 2008

Make It Pretty!     posted on 14th of february, 2008

I want to tirade against three words, three words that can make anybody in the creative field of design cringe with a sense of disgust and loathing for the obviously ignorant individual that utters them. “Make it Pretty”

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for creating aesthetically pleasing designs get the point across while pleasing the eyes of the viewer. In fact that is one of the best way to get people to look at what is being advertised. Bringing a sense of beauty to a product by creating a look and feel that makes customers want to buy it, or find out more about it, is what graphic advertising is all about. While some people like to look at hideous things continually, I myself do not. So it makes sense that people pay and want designers to make the designs they ...

Well said. My own greatest challenges have been with copyfitting into ad space, trying to explain why they shouldn't have twelve bullet points in an 1/8 pg spot. - posted by Niagaragirl on February 14, 2008

Art, color, light, nature, and tons of other things grab my attention. I liken this world and all of the fascinating images in it to me being like a Kid in a candy store. There is so much to see that I could go nuts taking pictures and drawing. I have been blessed with creativity which I enjoy at every moment of my life. Everything I do is effected by it. Everything I do comes out of it. For that I am grateful. It is also my job to be creative, so that works out well for me.
