Looking at other portfolios     posted on 31st of march, 2008

I think that I will stop looking through others portfolios, seeing the most popular images, the newest images. I worry too much that I might accidently copycat someone else.

I love to see everyone else's designs and yet I am concerned that it will inspire me and that inspiration may be too close to the original, or a few days from now I will design something that is a vague recollection of something I have seen by someone else.

I have a varied portfolio as you can see by these different subjects.

I think the old adage "there is nothing new under the sun" is why I think of it. It is like the person who invents something only to be too late to the patent office and someone else makes millions on it.

I don't ever want to be guilty of copying any one else and yet sometimes we can see another old adage come to pass "great minds think alike"

Great post!! Of course intentional copying with so little efforts as possible and just steeling others work, telling it's mine creation, is totally disgusting, it's just not fair. But it's so true when we start too much worry about, could it be too similar to others, can just block our creative mind, and that doesn't help anyone. "There is nothing new under the sun" - I know where those words are from and they are so true. Every invention of scientists or artists is only reflection of what they can see from the big world around us. The Wright brothers designed an airplane after studying large birds in flight, Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel designed the tower in Paris, using the basic principles that enable the human thighbone to support the body’s weight. Swiss engineer George de Mestral noticed after a walk with his dog, that the dog’s fur were covered with burs, and after examination the burs under a microscope, he invented Velcro. I doubt there's any human inventions that don't imitate something that exist in the nature. :) And here I just almost quoted Phil Gates (not Bill!), a scientist and author of the book Wild Technology, who said: "Many of our best inventions are copied from, or already in use by, other living things." And that's true in the art too. Rule of thirds, golden ratio, we apply in the arts, we can see everywhere in the nature all around us. And I have noticed, that if artists want to invent something that doesn't exist in the nature - for example an alien creature for a movie - they always look ugly, slimy and repulsive. I haven't seen any beautiful fictitious characters, what are not inspired by something that already exists in the nature. So really, keep on creating what you like and don't be afraid of getting inspired by other artists works, that's why there are so many of us in the world, that we could constantly improve and inspire each other. :)
