How to photo the sunglow     posted on 15th of april, 2008

In most places, you only have 10 to 15 mins to take photos of sunset or sunrise, and for sunglow, you also need to keep monitor the clouds shapes and distributions while closing sunset, and you should arrive the right position 20 mins before the sunset time that you can check in the internet. For me, I'm lucky enough ^_^ that I can take such photos just from my balcony, or run downstairs to find a better angle if I want to include the bay views.

Since the proper time lasts not long, I'll suggest your camera in correct setting already, I use Nikon D70 and normally I select the "landscape" mode.

Another thing is the lens, in most cases you'll use wide angle to get the spectacular momentum, such as 18-70mm, but I also use 70-200mm sometimes to take 3-6 photos and merge them by photoshop.

How about metering? Just use the 3-D matrix meter, it works well. If you do want to use spot meter, you need pay attention the exposure compensation depend the the dark or light area you focus on, I'm not suggest you to use this mode.

Finaly, use aperture-priority (A mode) will also make the job easy.

Now you can get a beautiful sunglow pictures! But here let me share a tip that you want to get a blue sky, just adjust the while balance to lower color temeprature, try "fluorescent", you can get a surprise! Actually I always use RAW format, so I can adjust the color temperature in Nikon capture NX (or photoshop), if you only use jpg format, the channel mixer -> blue channel can also help you, but I feel the blue is not so pure.

Enjoy it!

Thanks for the tips! I use D70 also, but my sunsets don't come out like this. Great job.
