My region Umbria: Assisi and Spoleto

posted on 20th of july, 2008

Today I want speak of my beautiful region who I live. Umbria is the green heart of Italy and it is composed of History, culture, gastronomy and folklore, uncontaminated nature and art towns. The playbill is extremely rich and combines the greatest and consolidated manifestations of the national panorama with surprises, inventions and novelties in a hymn to fantasy and creativity. Towns, boroughs, villages and museums boast a striking artistic, monumental, archaeological patrimony in a natural scenario of rare beauty. Folklore is also relevant and old rites and customs are rediscovered on occasion of any single festivity.
The umbria's city that I prefer are Assisi and Spoleto.

Assisi is a medieval city that has remained unchanged for centuries and it is still protected by massive city walls. The town was built on the western spur of Mount Subasio (altitude 424 meters above sea level), stretching longitudinally from south-west to north-east, and it is set on a series of terraces, with the Rocca or fortress – silent and dominant – set in the middle. Its ideal geographical position and mild dry climate make Assisi an enjoyable vacation spot all year long.

Spoleto is an ancient city in the Italian province of Perugia in east central Umbria on a foothill of the Apennines. Spoleto, even if shows evident traces of the Roman era even in its urban structure, substantially mantains a medieval appearance, due to the period in which it was first a flourishing longobard Duchy, and then an important city within the Papal State. Among the most important manifestations taking place in the city we should absolutely mention the festival Festival of the two Worlds.

Here some photos of Assisi and Spoleto:

Great shots Elisa, Umbria looks like a wonderful town. I never made it there when I was in Italy, I did however fall in love with the Italian country side. My favorite city was Trovoli.
