Dallas - my almost hometown     posted on 4th of july, 2008

I live a couple of hours east of Dallas, TX. So, I was pleased to get these shots of my "almost-hometown" recently and to have them accepted here on Dreamstime. Here's a few shots of the modern Dallas downtown area... and also a few shots of a jet departing from the huge DFW airport.

As a pilot and a photographer - what better than to combine my two loves? And, from a stock photography perspective they make great symbols of travel, transportation, aviation, etc.

I've always been impressed with giant passenger jets so gracefully passing overhead on short final. If possible, I try to find a public road that lies just under the final approach path at a major airport.

Then, if it is safe to do so, I try to grab a few shots as they pass overhead. I've learned its not easy. I find my autofocus has a hard time latching on to the shiny metallic jets. And, they're moving rather fast as well - making autofocus tricky at best.

NYC in HDR     posted on 31st of july, 2008

I love New York City. And, I love the technique of HDR - high dynamic range photography. So, I really loved the chance to take some evening photos of the city and utilize HDR technique on these photos.

From Liberty State Park on the NJ side, I took these photos last week. I need to take three RAW exposure-bracketed shots: one properly exposed, one -2 underexposed and one +2 overexposed. I didn't have my tripod, so I had to simply place my camera on a little concrete ledge. Exposure times were rather long at the f/8 aperture I preferred to use for maximum sharpness.

I set white-balance on the three photos and then export them as 48 bit TIFF files. I then use my HDR software to combine the three images and hopefully give me a very large dynamic range in the photograph. After generation ...
