Churches

Lately churches have been a subject of interest for me especially older churches. I have taken several pictures of churches here in California and on my recent trip to Florida I took a few pictures of some of the older churches that I found was interesting.

Here are the churches that I have photographed so far:

The Memorial Church (A.K.A. Mem Chu) at Stanford University. The outside of the church has a mosaic on the wall of Jesus blessing the people. The church was completed in 1903. The church was built as a memorial to Leland Stanford by his wife Jane Stanford

Mission Santa Clara de Asis located in the middle of Santa Clara University

Mission San Juan Bautista was founded on June 24, 1797. San Juan Bautista was the 15th Mission built out of 21 California Spanish Missions.

Christ Episcopal Church is part of the historic district in Longwood, Florida. Built in 1881. Dedicated on Easter Sunday 1882. Reminiscent of the Anglican Mission style churches of Old Florida.

The next church is special to me because this was my Grandmother's church before she passed away and I remember going to this church with my family as a child on special occasions to be with my Grandmother.

Presbyterian Church of Upsala is a historical landmark

The sign next to the church is the historical info which reads:

In October 1890, the younger generation of Swedish immigrants, whose parents had been persuaded to settle here by Henry Sanford organized a Swedish Presbyterian congregation along American lines. In 1891 the congregation was enrolled in the South Florida Presbytery.

The original structure was erected in 1892, and was used continuously until it was moved from its previous location closer to the street corner, when the new building was constructed in 1985.

The first pastor of the Upsala Church was the Rev. John Frederick Sundell who also organized the Lake Mary Church two miles south of here in 1894. It is popularly believed the town of Lake Mary was named for Rev. Sundell’s wife, Mary Amelia.

The Upsala Church was probably named after Upsala University near Stockholm, Sweden, one of the oldest universities in Europe.

finally I also have an interest in old Church doors:

Kress Memorial Church in Winter Park, Florida

You can find more of my church photos HERE and I am hoping to add more in the near future to my portfolio.
