RHETORIC AND IMAGING - SIMILARITY     posted on 2nd of november, 2008

Continuing my blog series of Rhetoric, let us analise the second form of relation between the visual elements of an image, the Similarity.

SIMILARITY

Similarity is about using similar visual elements yet not identical in the image.
Those visual elemenst can be added, suppressed, substituted or exchanged.
Similarity can happen in two ways, form and content.

SIMILARITY ADDITION FORM - RHYME

The Addition of Similarity in its form is called Rhyme and is the repetition of elements with the same form on the same or on a group of images.
Largely used, its an effective way to emphasize the importance of the repeated element.

SIMILARITY ADDITION CONTENT - SIMILE

The Addition of Simiarity in its content is called Simile and is the repetition of elements that resemble the same content on the same or on a group of images.
Largely used, its an effective way to emphasize the importance of the repeated element.

SIMILARITY SUPPRESSION FORM - CIRCUMLOCUTION

The Suppression of Similarity is called Circumlocution.
You delete elements linked to other elements of the message by relations of similarity of form.
Showing the reflection of a person in a mirror without showing the person himself is a simple visual transposition of this figure.

SIMILARITY SUPPRESSION CONTENT - CIRCUMLOCUTION

The Suppression of Similarity is called Circumlocution.
You delete elements linked to other elements of the message by relations of similarity of content.

SIMILARITY SUBSTITUTION FORM - ALLUSION

This is named Allusion in traditional Rhetoric.
An image resembles something else with a similar form.

SIMILARITY SUBSTITUTION CONTENT - METAPHOR

This is named Metaphor in traditional Rhetoric.

SIMILARITY EXCHANGE FORM - HENDIADYS

This is called Hendiadys in traditional Rhetoric.
A similarity is established between an object form and an abstract idea

SIMILARITY EXCHANGE CONTENT - HOMOLOGY

This is called Homology in traditional Rhetoric.
A similarity is established between an object content and an abstract idea.
