Be wary of Facebook...     posted on 16th of february, 2009

You probably heard about it already, but just in case...

On Feb. 4th, Facebook changed their terms of service (without telling anyone, because their terms of service give them the right to do so).

Basically, the biggest change is that whatever content is uploaded to Facebook belongs to them FOREVER, and that remains true even if the person that posted the content leaves the site.

Needless to say, that means that any image you upload on Facebook becomes theirs to sell and use as they wish.

Given the uproar that this change has caused, I can see them going back to the old TOS pretty soon, but once again Facebook showed that they cannot be trusted and that they are ready to do anything to generate income.

Shame, really...

Indeed, given the massive negative feedback they got, I don't see how they could have kept the TOS the way it was after Feb. 4th.

Still, as the writer of this article says, Facebook can only survive a few disasters like this one.

I, for one, will not be uploading anything to their servers, that's for sure!

Thanks for the information regarding this company’s tactics. It is a great reminder for us all too always read the fine print before posting our work with any internet entity.

It survived only a few days.
I see that now they went nuts.

I didn't even like their previous TOS, which is why I have never opened a FB account.

I just checked that and it sez: Except for user content and applications/connect sites, all materials, content and trademarks on the FB .. blah.. blah. Then it sez:
You are solely responsible for the User Content that you Post on or through the FB Service. You hereby grant FB an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to (a) use, copy, publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display, transmit, scan, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate, excerpt, adapt, create derivative works and distribute (through multiple tiers), any User Content you (i) Post on or in connection with the FB Service or the promotion thereof subject only to your privacy settings or (ii) enable a user to Post, including by offering a Share Link on your website and (b) to use your name, likeness and image for any purpose, including commercial or advertising, each of (a) and (b) on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof. You represent and warrant that you have all rights and permissions to grant the foregoing licenses.
