the importance of setting goals     posted on 5th of september, 2009

On the anniversary of my second year as a Dreamstime contributor, I’ve paused to reflect on the importance of milestones and how important it is to set yourself goals, both personally and in business.

For me, getting into microstock is a future potential career change that I can work towards over time. But a steep learning curve to get there!

in the beginning I started setting little goals for myself: learn photoshop, get a decent camera, market research and practise practise practise!

Even with a small portfolio I’ve hit a few modest milestones along the way. My first sale was for my very first upload within weeks. Boy was I thrilled! Every sale is so encouraging and I get addicted to checking my account to see what image will sell next – it's often surprising.

This year I started setting bigger goals, taking things more seriously, and applying the same approach to microstock that I do in business at my 'day job'. And I'm starting to see the results, hitting the milestones that so many other contributors talk about – so I'm excited for the future and motivated by an increase in sales.

Goal setting has helped this along. By setting myself goals that I knew I could reach within reasonable time frames I’ve managed to hit them, and often surpass them. Setting goals for yourself is important, but setting goals correctly is even more important. Being realistic doesn't mean taking the easy way, your goals should challenge you, but they should also be attainable rather than impossible. Otherwise you'll always feel defeated.

When I set goals I focus on my own performance rather than the outcome I’m hoping for. This way I have as much control as possible over what I’m working towards and the results do show if you persist.

So far this year I have met all my goals or I’m on target to do so. Time to start thinking about goals for next year and setting bigger challenges!

Hi Shawnna, goal setting is a major part to success in both personal and business life. As a point of interest you may like to check out my blog showing an extract from Robin Sharma's book "Who will cry when you die", I found it rather inspirational and hope you will too :0) - link as follows Goal Setting in 2009 - and beyond! - posted by Fultonsphoto on September 06, 2009
