Fall for fall: what sells best RIGHT now

posted on 16th of september, 2009

For those into site statistics, we have come up with one download evaluation you might find both interesting and useful. You will find below the most downloaded images over the very recent days. The list is presented for you to assess and draw some conclusion from the contributor's point of view. It contains five top downloads from the free section and five best sellers from the commercial Royalty free one. This statistics may not be valid for all times but you can easily find common points among images and see how market interest and demand center on specific subjects and according to certain selection criteria.
At this time, it reveals a download preference for generic images associated to autumn, to season change or seasonal activities. Barren trees, vine design, drying leaves or wine making seem to have been top choices for designers. Moreover, keep in mind that autumn is not only about nature. After the summer break, it also marks the start of sports championships. Soccer obviously remains favorite, at least for Europeans.

It is not unusual that contributors upload images related to a certain season. While your main focus has been Easter, Christmas or summer vacation-related images, we recommend that you also consider other niche subjects (as long as they are useful to a large number of customers) and their specifics.
Do not leave out a major characteristics: most images are isolated, with plenty of copy space so as to allow designers to easily use images in their designs. Simplicity of compositions is also to be taken into consideration. All images have great visual impact given exactly by this simplicity.

This is a nice article. I personally LOVE fall imagery. I actually created a collection of Autumn images because they just captivate me. Thanks for writing about this wonderful time of the year and the special images that magically happen during these months.

Interesting. I agree with you about the major characteristics to use: isolated images, plenty of copy space, most importantly, versatility for designers to choose how they want to compose a design. However, I've found that many of those evaluating images on dreamstime are photographers and not designers and therefore view pics with a photographer's eye for composition etc. This has made it often difficult for me as a designer to find images with the characteristics you mentioned because those images are often not selected. Good stock is not the same as a good photograph. You should forward the paragraph on major characteristics to the dreamstime evaluators.

Thanks Tangie, every little bit of extra info we can get helps. I was feeling like I was behind everyone else (here it is spring so no summer shots for assignment) but now I'm thinking maybe I'm ahead ( I've only got autumn and winter shots). I think I'll be more 'with it' when I've been here a year. lol :0)

Is this done with sort by downloads? to get the most popular images. Great information on targeting images to niche markets. The reverse might also work in looking at what is not selling.

Needless to say that to sell NOW, one should've uploaded weeks or months before. But we still love the 1,423 pumpkins we receive daily. :)
