SEO 101: Sitemaps and Search Engines

Sitemaps can help search engines and humans navigate your website more efficiently. Not only do they enhance the experience for some users, but it also provides an SEO benefit. I can already hear you beginning to ask:

* What is a sitemap?
* How does it improve my SEO?
* How do I create a sitemap?

That’s exactly what we will discuss in this article.

What is a sitemap?

There are two types of sitemaps. One for humans, and one for search engines.

Sitemaps for humans

A sitemap is, as defined at webcontent.gov, “a linked, graphic or text-based display of a website’s hierarchy, similar to an organization chart.” Essentially, it is a directory of all the pages on your site. Sometimes these directories are broken up into the different sections of a site, and sometimes they are just big lists of links to every page on your site.

How you decide to organize your sitemap is up to you, but try to do it in a way that you think will be the most efficient in helping your users find what they are looking for.

To read more about the benefits of the second type of sitemap, intended specifically for search engines, and how to create your own check out the rest of the article on Perception's Blog.
