Thank you for the free photos!!

posted on 6th of september, 2010

Having looked around the web the past few months for free RF images, I'm really impressed with the offering on Dreamstime which seems to have one of the biggest and best selections and the easiest database to search within.

As the administrator for a small law firm's website, one of my more recent tasks is to further develop the content and presentation in the news and articles sections. With a limited budget to manage the site overall I haven't a lot to spend on images right now, so freebies have been a huge help to get things started.

Because we've gone for a very local feel, most of the imagery across the site includes photos I have taken myself. The DIY approach!

But I needed A LOT more images for the article pages and of such variety that I just couldn't provide myself. Time for some stock photos!

I purchase images as I can, like this recent editorial example which was perfect for a recent news story (I was surprised how few images there were available of this sort given the current market conditions)…

But then I used this beautiful free image on the banner for this month's online newsletter (thank you to Kobra)…

I know various contributors have mixed feelings about providing free images; I reckon the arguments on both sides are equally valid and no one is right or wrong. Whatever works for you, but I'm glad that so many Dreamstime contributors have been generous with their free offerings!

For my part as a user of free images I would like to say that with Dreamstime providing comparative images to purchase alongside the free images search, it's easy to pick an image for purchase instead and I certainly do!

So to all those contributors who have provided free images… THANK YOU!!!

Here are a few more of my favourite freebies used recently and the link to the site where I'm using them if you're interested – www.barbertitleys.co.uk – and if you're in the area and need legal advice just let me know! ;-)

Many thanks for posting here. It is always interesting to see how our work is used and much appreciated. On a side note, I couldn't take this particular picture today as the local council now has a ban on such signs in areas close to the seafront! Regards, David.

Thanks Kittycat, I donate free images too and love seeing them put to good use, I always check out portfolios of contributors of free images and would def purchase from them if the right image came up. In fact I have several dozen book-marked for future use that I'm hoping I can use.

While it isn't always possible to put the photographers credit with the photo what I do for online use is ensure that images and credits are optimized as best I can for browser search and identification.

I am glad you appreciate free images. I have donated many free images that were in my portfolio for four years that never sold. Well now they are free they have many dl's . It would be nice to put the photographers name or DT image next to the image being used. It would also be nice to purchase an image from the photographer who provides free images. Since the images are quite inexpensive.
What I have finally done is stopped donating for sometime since I have more free dl's then I have probably sold. Just my point of view and I am sure theere are others who feel the same way.

Thanks Mani! And good article from you as well on free images. I've purchased more images than free ones I've ever used, in fact have really only used free images these last few months but I was surprised by some of the good quality available in the free section, but you are right in saying not all subjects are covered and it can't be relied upon as a sole source of images for buyers.

In response Saorsa - as I said above, each contributor has their own opinion re free images and I appreciate and respect that you personally disagree, donating images is not for everyone.

Point noted about site credit page and just to reassure this is under review as to the format that will be used for all stock items and will be updated shortly.

I'd like to also note that law firms are a business just like any other and affected by the recession just like any other, and contrary to popular belief the pockets are not bottomless!

With all due respect, I don't think I would like to provide free photographt to a profit making law firm. This is particularly so when I look to the site credits page and don't see a reference to dreamstime or the photographers who provided the free images.

This is one reason I don't let my images go to the free section.

Great to know that buyers or image user is contacting us! ... Here is my opinion about free images on DT & it's for sure one of DT strong points that I recommend buyers at least to try it for their projects & who knows maybe to become a faithful client!

Thanks for sharing the use of images! :)
