Ambiental food photography     posted on 19th of october, 2010

My portfolio does not have any particular style or theme, it does not follow any particular niche or strategy. I just shoot that I like. And today I would like to share some of my favorites. Namely, these are food favorites I've created this spring-summer (2010).

1. Grape bunch was shot in Calabria (southern Italy) in conditions of extreme backlight. Adjustment in the Lightroom caused appearance of heavy noise yet lovely colors. No color adjustment was applied. And I proud of nice bokeh on the nicely lit background.

2. Prickly pear cactus shot in Calabria as well. The light is extremely hard which is natural for that place. Therefore, the picture looks naturally: hard light and prickly cactus. Vibrant colors are due to a LOT of light and pretty glass Canon 70-200 f/4 IS L. I also like a volume that is presented in this picture exactly thanks to harsh shadows (and shallow depth of field).

3. Starwberries, low-key style. This picture was taken in Paris in a food market. The weather was dusk and rainy, the kiosk light was not enough - devastating conditions in the absense of any tripod! Well, raising ISO up to 500, making aperture f/4: it was enough to make a picture without being shaken. Of course, the low-key look was inevitable anyway, so corresponding vignetting was added to enhance it. From my view point it looks not only yummy but alsy arty.

Resume: do not be affraid of extreme ambiental lighting conditions - they will help you create, probably, an unusual and particular picture you could be proud of.
