Xmas, Money and the Significance of a Microstock portfolio.

posted on 10th of december, 2010

So I actually got my pics uploaded as well! There are still some left, and some are under review, but should have the full compliment of Xmas pics up for Xmas. Which is actually a bit late, but hey, next year is only 1 year away!

Who knows, by next year I might be earning enough from my Xmas portfolio to pay for Christmas presents!! I think that's a neat goal, don't you think? Or my Easter Eggs?

In fact, the way I've viewed my microstock portfolio (I'm a full-time commercial and wedding photographer), is to pay for my bandwidth and internet hosting costs as a first goal. After that... I'll see, but I find that that helps me with orientation towards my uploading schedule, shooting regimen etc. Btw, how your New Year's and Valentine's images coming along?

The longer I'm shooting microstock, the more I realizze the significance of having a seperate microstock portfolio. A commercial portfolio tend to be product and concept specific, whereas a microstock portfolio tends to be more generic. I finsihed a diploma in Photography 10 years ago, and this year completed a Bachelor's degree in PHotography... do you know what on? Well, the surge of microstock imagery into the marketplace. Do you know what my portfolio consisted of? Images I currently had in my microstock portfolio. So, the significance to me was the my microstock excursions here and on other sites got me a Bachelor's degree! (Ok - with lots and lots and lots of reading, writing, research included in the mix and two years of tutorship).

So, what am I on about? I'm keen on site like Dreamstime, that has movement, is in terms of usership the biggest agency in the world, and that has in less than a decade, turned the macrostock photography market of the last 77 years (started with the Brettman Archive in 1933) on its head. We're part of a revolution! And I love being part of that. I'm from South Africa, so peaceful revolutions is what we're about ;)
