Assignment: the importance of a concept

posted on 16th of march, 2011

I recently reached 50 uploads and I participate to the assignment for the first time last month. Before I never took pictures thinking about a concept, even if I read that this is very important in microstock. Anyway this is a hobby for me and I just took pictures during my travels. The fact that now I had to think of a concept before taking pictures was an interesting challenge for me. The subject was help. I thought: do I help? As a matter of fact I and my wife volunteer at a dog shelter. So I decided to take some pictures of some of the cute puppies we take care of.

I had to overcome many technical difficulties: I don't usually take pictures of animals, I don't have a studio, so no experience at all in the field. Anyway with a little patience and my improved skills at photoshop I came out with some decent images.

These images were taken at the shelter and the puppies are on a chair with a white fabric on.
Even if not accepted for the assignment these pictures were accepted as regular RF images.

Checking out the results of the assignment I found out that this image won the 2nd prize.
I was very happy. Although this image has probably a better composition and quality than mine, the concept is similar, so it means that my idea wasn't so bad. This gave me even more enthusiasm to try again next time and improve even more. Congrats to Rose-marie Henriksson by the way.
Now I am trying try to focus more on concepts and I have already uploaded new pictures based on concepts. My wife is the model.

Also these images are not taken in a studio. This concept thing gave me the opportunity to upload some picture even when I am not traveling and made me improve as a photographer.

I think your puppies are adorable, and that you did very well in executing your concept, even with little experience doing so. Well done! I hope the next concept you shoot turns out just as well as this one. Best of luck to you! :)

No your idea wasn't bad at all and that puppy is so lovable!!! I had the photo of my hand holding my cat's paw rejected for the assignment but accepted as a regular too. We'll both try next time :)

Thanks guys. Always nice to be appreciated!!!

Digitalexpressionimages thanks for the tip. I will keep it in mind. I noticed that for shooting these concept pictures I had to pay more attention to light, focus and good composition. With travel pictures it is easier. Lifestyle and objects should be my next step I guess.

Nice work. And congratulations! FYI, your travel images are great too.

It's always good to find ways to improve but don't go overboard on the concept thing. Many stock images are needed of everyday situations (lifestyle images) as well as scenery, objects and so on, none of which falls into the category of "conceptual". Shoot what interests you and do it in an interesting way paying attention to light, focus and good composition and you'll have winning pictures all the time.
