Stocker's Notebook     posted on 20th of august, 2011

>Do you have or carry a Stock Notebook?
I’m sure, like me, you all have been out and about (very often without camera) and have come across a subject which you thought would make stock material.
Other times we may have shot a subject but may not have just got it right either compositionally or technically at the time.

This is where the “little black book” comes in handy. In particular it is very useful for outdoor work.
Here you can make a memorandum of subjects for a return visit, taking note particularly of location and the time which relates directly to the lighting which prevailed. These times and dates (as all of you will probably will know) are easily accessible from the playback in your camera.

Other important factors which can be noted are opening times/access, seasons and things like tide timetables etc.

Lastly, and another very important thing to make note of, is if you will need a tripod or not. Like myself, I’m sure many of you don’t carry one all the time.

Some of my best selling outdoor images have resulted from a second visit to a particular subject, just to get it right – and thankfully I did!.
