Poppa Needs a Brand New Lens

posted on 1st of december, 2011

It's now December and if the world of business is anything like my former corporate life, this is the time of year when department heads are asked to "use it or lose it".

Year end budgets are always strange animals in the world of business. Unlike your household budget, where having some money left over is a good thing, in the corporate world, not spending your allocated fund means you get less the following year.

So typically at this time of year various departments are looking for ways to spend unspent funds. Since they know that management will be looking for cuts in next year's budgets, everyone works to pad their budget up so the cuts really don't amount to anything.

Often if one can prepay for outside services, or order supplies for next year ahead of time with...

Good idea - hope you have lots of buyers reading this :).
And hope Mrs. Claus brings you what you want!

Ha! That dog house vid is great! Actually I was only joking about the vacuum. I've been pre-warned many times that such a gift wouldn't be appreciated. ;-)

You should have watched this before you got her the Vacuum - LOL My favorite part is what they have to eat every day :)

Tip: Taking Care with the Use of Brandnames

posted on 2nd of december, 2011

Is that business man really giving a "PowerPoint" or is he giving a slide presentation? Is that woman "Googling" or surfing the Internet? Are those really "Lego" in the photo or some other brand of building bricks? Is your dog wearing a "Speedo" or just a very small swim suit?

I think we could all do a better job of recognizing protected brandnames what have creeped into popular culture. For example here are some common abuses of using brandnames instead of the actual object.

“AstroTurf” when we mean artificial turf

“Band-Aid” when we mean adhesive bandage

“Bondo” when we mean auto body filler

“Brillo Pad” (or “SOS Pad”) when referring to any type of scouring pad made with steel wool embedded with soap

“Bubble Wrap...

Here is another one hear in England - "Hoovering" instead of vacuuming. Hoover is a brand of vacuum cleaner.

Tip - Cheap Flash Units for DIY Studios

posted on 8th of december, 2011

Lately I've been experimenting with a DIY home studio setup in the basement. I started with continuous lighting using large CFLs but moved on to trying out flash units.

I picked up an inexpensive flash trigger systems for three units from iShoot off Ebay that consists of a trigger that sits in the flash holder on your camera and three receiver units that fire the flashes.

So far the results have been great. I picked up a couple of inexpensive umbrella stands, a few flash clamps and a few shoot through umbrellas. This stuff is all new to me so its all very exciting. ;-)

For the actual flash units - one is a Olympus T-20 that I had from back in my high school days when I had an Olympus OM10 which as a popular budget camera in those days. I've long since sold off my...

Thanks Cmoulton. My doggie "Tiki" - First photo of him accepted. He was a very good model even with the flashing strobes. The flashes allowed him to stay sharp.

Tip - One Key to Success is Diversification

posted on 19th of december, 2011

"Don't put all of your eggs in one basket" is an old saying that rings true with micro stock photography. At least in my limited experience.

Basically there are two schools of thought when it comes to your portfolio:

One is that you should concentrate on what you like to photograph. If you like taking pictures of trains or flowers or the stars, then develop a stunning portfolio that covers the subject from all angles. The only downfall of this is if your subject matter is not in demand of potential buyers.

This strategy is appealing to those who really love a certain subject and use photography to express this love. But in the end you might have the most amazing portfolio of 500 images of paper clips (if that's what gets your creative juices flowing) but there might only be six buyers looking...

Early Christmas present - a nice Tiff sale

posted on 20th of december, 2011

I've had a good day today sales wise. The most exciting one was this Tiff sale:

That image was one of the first ones I uploaded.

I'll be looking for it on a billboard or the side of a bus I guess. I also had a nice quick sale of this image that I just recently uploaded:

And my wife will be happy to know that her gardening efforts from last summer are popular:

I certainly appreciate the early Christmas presents!

Inspiration - Baking Cookies

posted on 27th of december, 2011

Every year at Christmas time my wife plans out a cookie baking marathon. Over the course of a few weeknights and a weekend, my wife with assistance from our son (I didn't do anything), bakes several batches of cookies which are then given away to friends, family and co-workers. Who doesn't like a plate full of homemade Christmas cookies?

This year since hubby has taken up stock photography, the annual event had the addition of flashguns, umbrellas, camera and tripod. I got a wide variety of shots out of the whole baking sessions including action shots of the baking process, still-lifes of the completed cookies and a few concept shots using the tasty baked items.

Great inspiration for photographs can come from every day family activities and its a great way to be involved...

Happy New Years! Looks like yet again another New Year's Eve watching Dick Clark.

Here's a toast to the world economy improving in 2012, more peace on Earth, less bickering politicians, more concern for preserving the earth, less extremist viewpoints, less greed, ever spreading freedom, improving global women's rights and more goodwill to our fellow planet Earth inhabitants.
