One Year In

posted on 1st of january, 2012

I guess it is really two years in, I initially submitted some photography in January 2010 but failed the submission process and I go t a little demoralised so I wwent away and did a 365 Project to force me to learn the nuances of my camera and improve a little... I resubmitted at the start of January in 2011 and sailed through with the photogrph to the left being one of my original submissions and still one of my favourites photogrpahs, although I have subsequently learnt that favourite photographs are not necessarily the most profitable ;) Buoyed by my inital success I went on a photography blitz and uploaded a further 79 pictures with 53 accepted onto the database!

I thought that this stock photography malarky was going to be a walk in the park, particularly when I had two sales just a week later and one of which being a TIFF sale, imagine my disapointment when just a couple of days later they were refunded... A very harsh lesson to learn indeed! So almost daily I was submitting pictures and whilst I was there checking out my current balance and each and every day it was showing me a full set of zero's, maybe this was not going to be quite so easy. All through January I was tormented by the Zero's, no sales but the number of views was slowl increasing and on February 2nd I finally sold my first picture, not exactly what I thought was going to sell but hey we all learn eventually not to try and predict what will or won't sell!

The year continued steadily with sales growing steadily and I reached Payout Number 1 in October and am slowly chipping away at payday number 2 although sales n the last couple of months have been a little slower, although I am sure they will pick up. October was a good month I guess alongside payday I racked up my first level 2 sale (left) and it certainly goes to prove that models do not need to be pretty, a self portrait that went on to sell 7 times during the year and is tops in terms of both overall revenue and downloads! I still have only 1 level 2 sale but I have several more pictures just waiting to cross the line into the level 2 goodness... The end of the year has definately seen me slow down but things are still good.

I ended the year with 424 images online with an acceptance rate of 68.1% and a total of 148 sales... I have no idea where this is going but getting paid for shooting pictures is an awful lot more rewarding than the 365 project I did in 2010. I am definately a little more perplexed as to what to shoot now and apart from my last set of images seem to have a good view as to what will be accepted by reviewers than I did before but we shall see what 2012 has to offer.

Thanks to all the good folk that have offered kind words and advice on the way and I hope you all have a good year ahead :)
