My new Canon G1X

posted on 25th of may, 2012

I had many doubts regarding the Canon G1X but when I was able to grab a used one for a really good price I chose to go for it.
My main thing was to have a second camera next to my DSLR which is more compact when travelling. I was also after the wide angle range 28-35mm, so I was looking at the Fuji X100 and also the Leica X1. The Canon has also the wide angle with F 2.8 so that spoke for "her".
The sensor has my desired size - and I'm used to the older G10 so I knew about the capabilities of these cameras but also the downturns like for example the autofocus or the viewfinder. Anyway, my first tests showed me that I did a good choice - I was walking around in Sydney and when it comes to light but still flexible, affordable and high quality gear there really isn't much choice. Both of the pictures here were taken with the Canon - both times I was glad about the really good anti-shake system combined with high ISO's - both times, for different reasons, I wouldn't have been able to take these pics with my "normal" DSLR - so I'm looking forward missing less opportunities taking pictures - but I also learned again to appreciate my DSLR :)

That's right, a perfect camera for street photography, indeed. Thxs to you Martingraf.

Great pic - totally the perfect area for the G1X - street scene and no one really takes you very serious because the camera doesn't really stick out and look like a professional camera - I think this is an important aspect - at many locations you just don't want to be seen as an photograph but rather appear as a "tourist"

I also bought a G1X this year, to have a smaller camera when I don't want to take along the bigger and heavier 5DMkII. The most interesting thing is that you can work completely manually on it, like on your DSLR, and the image quality is great. A camera I would recommend!
I took this one with my G1X during a trip to Rome:

the main difference is for sure: the larger sensor - what a difference - ISO 1600 is no problemo anymore - is as good as ISO 200 on the G10

You had G10 before, what are the advantages of new G1X in comparison to old G10. Any pros that make it worth switching?

lol - haven't found the colour in the menu yet - still going through the manual - only found the blue   Fleecy clouds in blue sky

this camera is black and white?! :)

It's good to know how this camera perform in color photos. Many black and white photos are good, but in terms of qualtiy color saturation, many camera models fails. Sensor of the camera is very important.

From the result seen on flickr as color example, i'm not 100% satisfied with this model. I need a second small camera too....but i will wait a little bit :)

I reckon you don't really want to use the optical viewfinder much because it just doesn't give you enough information - but therefore the LCD is so good you won't really miss the viewfinder that much - regarding the shutter lag, honestly I find it rather quick responding. I don't know how old your son is or how interested in photography, but for people who just want to take good photos I would rather go for a cheap DSLR - this camera isn't really build for beginners - yes they can use it, but I think that wasn't the purpose they created this camera. I think from the build it is much stronger than my 550 or even the new 60.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us! I want to buy a camera for my son and the Canon G1X is one candidate. What is your experience with the shutter lag and the optical view finder?

Thanks a lot for your answer!

COngratulations, enjoy your new toy.

It is an interesting camera, but my main issue with it is the power zoom. It would be much more appealing to me with a manual zoom like the Fuji X10.

reckon that's right Concetta, that's what it's really build for - street photography and reportage - and it takes a while to find all the hints to get the best out of the camera, to get used to them without searching - but I could really imagine to go only with this camera on a long trip without regretting all the time that I have left my other gear at home - the good thing for me is that I can also use my Canon Speedlites, remote control, etc.

Having a good feeling with the compact is very important! Great buy and fun to create many images of street or reports!

yes, they might consider to do a manual zoom then and a viewfinder with at least 95% and also with information about what's happening and not only a green or orange light
