Let's go to the beach....

posted on 12th of august, 2012

Living at the coast has its advantages. Lovely coastal sunrises and sunsets. The summer months with lots of activity and holiday makers in the area. Winter of course has less advantages unless you are fortunate to have the mild winters that a town like Mossel Bay, South Africa enjoys.

We have the coast with White shark diving and then 10km's away from the beach you have a private game reserve with rhino, lion and antelope.

I have noted that most of my sold images have been coastal scenes and local farms. One of the more difficult things is getting shots that are unique and have commercial value.

The presence of lines, textures and colour and crucial...anyone can take a seascape or sunset shot but they are not all stock. Of all the shots I have uploaded into my portfolio I have had just as many declined.

Some things to note is play of light...golden hour of course is the best time, but I did not have to tell you that :-)

The play of light can however be to your advantage...you sometimes get those lost rays that can really bring the colour out in the seaweed or colours. Textures in the sand formed by the water retreating can also be superb and work to your advantage. Lastly...don't forget to get right up into the action. You tripod is going to get wet, your feet as well. Just remember to keep you camera safe and dry. Watch how the water splashes for a few minutes before taking position. You don't want freak waves drenching your gear.

Hope all this rambling was useful!!

Cheers and happy seascaping
Michael.

Alvera, the sales on these images are not fireworks but I have sold some of them. I enjoy shooting the land and seascapes and add them when I get a chance.
