Heartache Drives Artistic Inspiration

posted on 18th of august, 2012

If you have been following recent blogs, you have seen that there seems to be a lot of depression, anger and heartaches out there. I myself still suffering from a smashed heart. Crawling back from a 9 year relationship in which "the one whom name can not be uttered" just pulled the rug out from under our happy existence and left. Not cause we fought, not because we weren't lover and best friends; we were beautiful mates. And as an inside joke, we were "symbiotic'. He gave no reason other then, "I don't know why, I just cant".

Being a constant analyzer, I need SOME sort of answer as to what had happened. I've questioned therapists, hypnosis, mediation. I've asked psychics, astrologers, intuitives, etc. Needless to say, I was very much hurt by this forcefull conclusion to a wonderful chapter. But a funny thing, I realized that each avenue I ventured, seem to all provide the same sort of answer on why all this happened. Depression.

Therapist said he was depressed, hypnosis said that I was depressed, mediation said the World's energy was depressed, and all my "taboo new age" help told me that we are in the age of depression.

And you know what? I think it's true. Google "depression 2012". Article after article comes up about how professionals, of different industries and walks of life, have analyzed data and trends and strongly believe we are in another Great Depression. Others believe that the world is ending in 2012 based on Mayan Calender ending, but its not the "world" as in nature, or earth, but we are going to end, humans self implode based on this strong negative, depressed energy. May be possible...

But this depression is all around, and I think it is truly inspiring artists. Take a listen to the top ten songs on the radio. They are all about break-ups, heartache, lost love. "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye, "Wide Awake" by Katy Perry, "Blow Me One Last Kiss" by Pink, "Want You Back" by Cher Llyod, etc...etc...

Encouragement and separation greeting cards are number one sellers on GreetingCardUniverse and CafePress. Hallmark even launched new categories of cards for job loss and rejection.

As photographers and artists we should too embrace this worldwide negative energy, use it to inspire and fill that commercial need!

Great post! I'd go out and shoot some photos, but right now I'm too depressed. Maybe tomorrow.
