The year which is about to end has been full of events: from the Olympic games to the US presidential elections, from riots and strikes to much debated bailouts, from record artwork sale to Felix Baumgartner's fearless supersonic jump, from the Queen's Diamond Jubilee to the announcement of the Royal baby, from Hurricane Sandy to the passing of some loved celebrities, we have seen and lived many interesting, wonderful, exciting but also sad or tragic things happening all over the world throughout 12 months. Our editorial section has successfully covered these events so here are some of the most popular editorial images in 2012:
The year opened with the Oscars where the beautiful and talented Meryl Streep went home with one more much deserved prize for portraying the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the movie "Iron Lady". Around the same beginning of the year, fans all over the world heard of the tragic death of Whitney Houston, one of the most successful artists of all times. After struggling for years with a drug addiction, Houston was believed to have accidentally drowned in her bathtub. There is still much controversy about the cause of death so we'll probably hear more about this in 2013 as well. 2012 has also been the year of movies and we've seen more adventures from Batman, James Bond, Madagascar or Ice Age characters.
As anticipated, Justin Bieber and Rihanna remained two of the best selling artists in 2012 as well. They are also some of the most googled celebrities around the world along with Lady Gaga, Madonna and Adele. Speaking of Adele, the beautiful singer is now a happy mom, has trademarked her name and released the theme song for the latest James Bond movie "Skyfall," all in just one year. Everybody danced the Gangnam Style dance as Psy's funny video became the first video in the history of the Internet to be viewed more than a billion times. The new English-Irish pop boy band One Direction has made a sensation this year and topped most major music charts worldwide. Looks like boy bands are back in the music business.
2012 has been a political year as well for many countries around the world. Some of the most popular political shots on Dreamstime covered the French elections in April when Francois Hollande, the candidate of the Socialist Party won with 51.64% of the votes. Let's not forget about the US elections in November, occasion on which Mitt Romney and Barack Obama images also became quite popular with our members. Obama won the elections and will be the US president for "four more years".
We've also had plenty of major sports events this year and the Olympic Games in London or the UEFA Euro football championship hosted by Poland and Ukraine were without any doubt the highlights of the sports editorial section. The most commented sports personality this year is probably the Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi, FC Barcelona's all-time top scorer. In 2012, he became the first player to score five goals in one match and the first player to top-score in four successive Champions League seasons.
The iPad and iPhone remain favorite choices for electronics consumers and google searches while 2012 is again the year of the social media networks with Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest attracting more and more members worldwide. Images with these brands have obviously been popular as well with our members.
That's about it for 2012 and we're now looking forward to 2013. Have your cameras ready.
