One evening I went to have a beer with some of my friends. The lastest hobby for one of them is airsoft. Lately he talks very often about it, about the rifles he owns, the way he upgraded his equipment. And I've became very curious about it. He told me - Tomorrow morning I'm going to an organized game of airsoft. Would you like to come and take some photos of us playing? I said Yes.
So, in the next morning, in a Saturday, I woke up at 7:30 to be ready for the game. The weather was great all week, so I thought it will be the same. It wasn't! At 8:30 when I started my car the outside temperature was -3 degrees Celsius! But I was to curious and I went to meet with the airsoft team.
The meeting point was at a petrol station, the team was there. They looked like they were about to go to war. Army boots, army clothes, army helmets and of course... army talk :) I met the team, I had a cup of coffee and we left to the place they were about to play.
The playground was an abandoned compound with to old buildings, striped of everything, only the concrete remained. I had to wear all the time protective goggles and a green fluorescent traffic vest so I wouldn't became a target :) I thought I will get hit a few times, but that's no problem, I didn't want for my new 5D Mark II to get hit, or my 70-200 lens.
The game went on for 4 hours, I wasn't hit at all, they were very careful not to hit me, although it happen for 2 or 3 times to get caught in the crossfire.
The my photos were great, everyone loved it. I had a problem though. The AF on my Sigma lens stopped working after 2 hours in the cold. My lens hood was stuck! I removed it at home, after a couple of hours of staying in an warm environment :)
The AF is working now, I think it was a matter of electrical contacts.
For me, it was a great day (and really cold) and a great experience. I've managed to make a few good photos and I've fired with all the airsoft gun I've wanted to.
I'm looking forward for the summer to do it again!
