Summer fun

posted on 23rd of july, 2013

Recently I picked up a used telephoto zoom for my Olympus OM-D. The zoom is designed for the older four thirds dSLR mounts, and as a result doesn't really work very well for Autofocus (until someone releases a micro four thirds phase detect AF sensor). However, the OM-D body does offer a very usable magnification assist for manual focus. I found it quite easy to use, and was able to get some shots of the kids boogie boarding on our summer holiday.

My technique was to be a bit predictive, as well as shooting slightly stopped down. The 50-200mm lens is a variable aperture f/2.8-3.5 and I tended to shoot at f/5.6. I found the results to be every bit as sharp as my old 70-200mm Canon lens in similar conditions. While being much less useful in Autofocus, the magnification in the viewfinder was much more useful than MF on the rear LCD of a dSLR... My point in all this is to counter the idea that fast continuous autofocus tracking is needed to get sharp images of kids in motion :) No doubt it helps, but practice can get you most of the way there...

Earlier in the summer I also had some luck with swimming shots of the kids, this time with a much smaller zoom lens from the poolside...

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer! It is getting hot here in Salmon Arm, and the water sure looks inviting...

I use Olympus cameras for many years, I commonly used E - 3, 12 -, 60, 50 F2, 50-200 lens feeling good, of course, in our here play OB SLR people more and more to the less, less recently, because of the OB SLR camera shutdown caused by bankruptcy.

How do you find the 12-60mm SWD lens? I'm considering it as a shop in town has it for half price and I think I'm the only guy in town who might be able to use it :)

You impress me ! i love my 12-60 but if i can do some landscape with it on my EM5, i gave up for the moment with my 6 years old.
He starts being shy, so i am using a lot the 75mm on him now instead of the 45mm.
