50th Anniversary of the Martin Luther King March

posted on 8th of september, 2013

I attended the 50th anniversary of the Martin Luther King March on 8/28/13 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. At first I thought it would be a bust as it was raining that day but a big crowd showed up anyway. There was a steady procession of activists, celebrities, singers and even the three presidents Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and the first lady Michelle Obama. The celebration lasted from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and was well worth it. A hot topic was the shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman. Many people felt that the death of Trayvon Martin was tragic and proof that civil rights for black people has slid backward. It is hard to tell who is telling the truth since there were only a few witnesses. George Zimmerman was acquitted and now faces a divorce from his wife. Another issue was the 15th amendment to voting rights which allows states to deny voting rights to black people.

Both black and white people attended this event. If you got there later than 9:00 AM there was a two hour wait to get through security. Luckily I got there at 9:00 AM. The celebration is as much a festival as a call to reignite the struggle for civil rights for blacks and minorities. History was made that day and there will not be another celebration until 8/28/63. I had a great time and took many photos with a super zoom camera which was useful for wide ange crowd shots and getting closer to the big tv screen at the Lincoln Memorial. I could also zoom in on individual people or couples. Take some money for a bottle of water or take water with you if you go for the next anniversary celebration. It is hot even on a rainy day. Hope some of you made it there.

Thanks all for the compliments. I took all the photos in natural light, did not use any flash. ISO was set to 100 for best quality. The celebrities and the three presidents could only be seen on the big tv screen or jumbotron so you could only photograph the screen. I actually like photographing real people better.

All of our U.S. legislators were invited to the event. This is clearly documented :-)

Black Republicans were not invited to attend. You would think this would have been the one event where politics and prejudices wouldn't be a factor.
