using old / vintage photos for stock?     posted on 31st of august, 2007

anyone know what the policy is for using vintage photos? in particular vintage photos with people. I have acquired a large box of family photos [+1500]. many of these are from the 1930's - 1950's. most are of my grandmother and grandfather and family members. There are some of my grandparents that I think would make for good vintage style stock. even though my grandparents have passed on [ have been for many years] would I still need a release? if so, why, and what kind of release?

If the photos were taken by your grandmother or grandfather then you need a property release. If they are dead, then you need a property release from the family that entitles you to use the images, Either way, if your grandparents did nor sign any paper of property release neither to you not to any other member of your family, then it is quite difficult as you need a paper, with signature and with legal liability, to use your grandparents photos. - posted by Tangie on September 03, 2007

Riding the rails...     posted on 31st of august, 2007

Ever since I was young I can remember the trains rolling through the end of my grandparents yard, blowing their whistle and in my mind....it sounded so loud I believe that my world was melting away with each trip. thunderous drones vibrate the every molecule in me. i would hide in the basement when hearing these engines coming from afar hoping it would deaden the drones. but no luck.

today the trains don't come as much as they used to. I miss that. back then there would be two, three, four engines pulling boxcar loads of things people need. today this doesn't happen.

I like trains. they have helped shaped the person I am. The engined roar forged my love of drone music. I miss the days when they would pass four/five times a day. I will be taking more photos where I ...

I am sticking my big toe in a large sea here. stock photography seems interesting but I am not sure if it is worth time and effort. any tips, ideas, suggestions or stories about lessons learned and battles lost would be greatly

appreciated.

thanks for the tips. I figured it would take a while to build up any sort of coin. I have browsed through many photos. I have noticed that many of the photos have only a few downloads. slow and steady wins the race!! its seems like the key here is finding a subject matter that has fewer photos. I have uncovered a few things already, i just hope my photos are accepted. thanks again! - posted by Israeltunis on August 29, 2007
1.-Take and upload loads of great images 2.-Develope a thick skin so as not to take rejections personally 3.-Take and upload loads of great images 4.-See what's in demand and if you can put a new twist on it 5.-Take and upload loads of great images 6.-Do searches for things to see if there's a hole in the market 7.-Take and upload loads of great images 8.-Be very patient. Building a portfolio up takes time as does any notable sales 9.-And finally take and upload loads of great images - posted by Tonygers on August 29, 2007
