Eye sight     posted on 25th of september, 2007

Do not take it for granted. I started wearing glasses at the age of eight. I have one of the worst cases of astigmatism my eye specialist has ever seen.

My sight without glasses is 20/400, which is considered legally blind.

About 14 years ago about six months after some major surgery I also developed a bad case of Iritis in my right eye (thankfully that is also the eye with the worst vision) Now I have had 6 rounds of the iritis in the 14 year period, and each time more and more damage can be done to my vision. I dread the feeling of waking up in the morning with the blurred vision and the red inflamed eye.

I can not use my right eye when taking photos, and though I prefer a screen view like on some cameras, my rebel does not have one. maybe someday I will be able to afford a newer one.

You know, you're right. I have a slight astigmatism and didn't even know I had it until I came back from a trip to Europe with some slightly out-of-focus photographs. That got me to the doctor fast, but in years since, I've been avoiding going back to the doctor. I need to get that done! - posted by Astargirl on September 25, 2007

Photography Contest - I am hooked     posted on 28th of august, 2007

You see them everywhere….. our electric co-op has two going right now, one for the monthly newsletter they send out, and a second for their yearly calendar. Yes I plan on entering both. Others for wildlife in our state I have found by searching in the internet different wildlife agencies, there are also national wildlife contest , and contest sponsored by tourism groups in many cities.

My hubby just entered three photos in the Friends of the blue ridge parkway contest, he took second place ($75) last year and that got us started. I still have to upload my three.

Make sure you read the rules and understand what they are looking for. Most of the time they want prints but some you can inter on line but this means resizing the photos to fit there needs.

Also check ...

I have learned the hard way that it pays to research a company before participating in a contest. There are many, MANY vanity presses out there who lure photographers into submitting images by promising them publication in an upcoming book. You will receive your book, but you must pay for it. - posted by Kenneystudios on August 29, 2007

Albuquerque or Bust….. ROAD TRIP     posted on 20th of august, 2007

We love to travel and we love hot air balloons. There is a local ballooning festival called Freedom Weekend Aloft. Great chance fore some photos. We go almost every year. But not next year.

We are saving up all the cash we can , because we are planning on going to Albuquerque NM in October to the biggest ballooning festival in the USA. We will also be celebrating our 25th wedding ann. at the same time. We hope to make the entire trip at least three weeks, so we can see more of the country. My hubby really wants to go to the Grand Canyon, and I just want to go… I do not care where.....

If you could make this trip yourself, where would you go?

Printer troubles.........     posted on 19th of august, 2007

We do allot of printing photos as we have 8 grandchildren, we do most of their school photos, family, birthdays, Christmas… We have also done many photo shoots for friends.

We use an Epson Stylus Photo R1800, and at first it gave us AMAZING prints. But now almost 18 months later we are having nothing but trouble. At first it was the magenta ink, and now it is either the yellow or the blue or both.

We have wasted enough photo paper and this off brand ink it would have been better to just spent the $$ to buy the Epson cartridges.

So my advice is for best results always buy the brand name ink four your printers. In the long run it saves you $$.

I used to buy the refurbished ink cartridges for my Lexmark. While they are indeed cheaper, my risks for getting a leaky cartridge or a worn out cartridge increased. I ran into several cartridges that would give me overflowing ink one day, then barely anything the next day, just to go back to overflowing ink the day after. It was alright for printing text drafts, but images were quickly ruined. - posted by Kenneystudios on August 20, 2007
I had the same trouble with our old Epson printer, if I bought the cheap ink it would gum up the printer heads quickly. So I definately agree with you that it is better to buy the name brand ink. I just don't understand how ink can cost as much as it does!! - posted by Limeyrunner on August 20, 2007

Inspiration     posted on 18th of august, 2007

Have you visited your local museum lately. Here in our SMALL town we went today for an exhibit caled "Trends In Photography." You can see some of the featured work posted on their website here Pickens County Museum

We saw some really great photos, some of the same things and places in our area that we had similar photos of. Almost all the works were for sale. So now we are trying to find out how you get invited to such a show. I would LOVE to see some of our work on display at a place like this.

We were also inspired to get out and try new things, and new ways to mount and show our work. There was even a grouping of 4 photos that was printed on a sheet ...

Can you feel it?? Fall Is In The Air!!!     posted on 14th of august, 2007

It is just beginning, the days are getting shorter. Soon the HEAT of summer will make way for the warm days and crisp cool nights of FALL. All the color and majesty of the harvest season is almost upon us. I can already see the early signs of the season and I can’t wait.

The apples, pumpkins, gourds, winter vegetables, the harvest foods. Beautiful colors in the trees as they get ready to drop there leaves for winters sleep. Beautiful clear blue skys, walks in the cool mountain air. Crisp fall leaves that crunch beneath your feet. I can almost smell the apple pie and the turkey baking in the oven.

Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas…. All the colors and splendur of the fall season, just around the corner,...

Special needs     posted on 13th of august, 2007

This is a subject near to my heart. My 8 year old granddaughter has CP & Autism, a feeding tube, and trouble communicating. She walks with a distinct gate and sometimes wears braces. She loves to swim, jump on the trampoline, play baseball, cheerlead for her brothers basketball team.... She is a great kid, though some of her behaviors are "Different."

She is stared at, laughed at and made fun of on an almost daily basis when out in the community. Though for the most part she seems like she doesn't pay attention to these RUDE people (adults and children) she has a few times told them to quit laughing, and once in a restraint she looked at a couple of teenage boys and said "What you looking at?" They never turned around again.

I am appealing to the advisitors & designers to include these ...

Frankenstein Computer     posted on 9th of august, 2007

Yes you read that right a Frankenstein Computer.

We came home last week from vacation to find my computer DOA, and all that left me with was a laptop that is around 6 years old.

I hate the screen on that darn thing so hubby hooked it up to run through my regular 17" monitor.

Well he hated the keyboard, so he also hooked up my wireless keyboard amd mouse. Works great.

But we found out that the mother board on PC was shot, so he took all the memory sticks and the CD/DVD burner and CD player out and put it all somehow in another box and it all now runs through the laptop also, along with another 150GB hard drive that I keep all my photos on.

And to top it all off my 8 year old granddaughter who has special needs has a touch screen that she uses to play educational games ...
