Lets take a look at top Canon's portrait configuration. The 1Ds Mark III and 85L f/1.2.     posted on 16th of december, 2008

That shot taken with Canon 1Ds M3 and 85mm 1.2 L lens.
I have a little word to say: that is amazing configuration! You can see how does it looks here.

My opinion: 85mm 1.2 L lens is only lens which are ready for 1Ds MIII resolution. Heavy, solid, "warm in hand". And a lot of glass on a board :)
Verdict:
"+":
Smooth, soft focus ring
Fast and precise auto focus engine (on 1Ds)
Sharp!
The smallest chromatic aberrations I have ever seen before (some times they are could be ignored on RAW processing)
The level of distortions is negligible

"-":
AF engine feels a little nervous and slow with Canon 5D exactly when shooting on open aperture.
Only f/16 to close
Minimal distance to object is .95 meter...
