Travel in Switzerland :: Luzern

posted on 1st of october, 2008

In the first days of August, I had a trip back from Oberalppass to Zurich. In Brunen we decided not to go home with train and we took a ship to Luzern, over the lake with the same name.
Very good option because was the first travel with a ship, outside Romania (in my country I was only on Danube Delta with water transportation) and because this lake is surrounded by mountains.
In only one hour and a half we arrived in the most beautiful city of Switzerland: Luzern/Lucerne.
Of course you cannot travel in a landmark without know something about that places.
So I search to some words about Luzern and around Luzern.

Luzern City

Lucerne (Luzern or Lucerna) is a city in Switzerland. It is the capital of the Canton of Lucerne and seat of the district with the same name. Its location is on the shore of Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstattersee) within sight of Mount Pilatus and Rigi in the Swiss Alps. Lucerne is considered first as a tourist destination. Old Town Lucerne is located just north of the Reuss River.
The city is the most beautiful from Switzerland, but is not in the first three of largest (Zurich, Bern, Lausanne). It has only 75.000 inhabitants (with neibourghood)

History
Around 750 the Benedictine Monastery of St. Leodegar was founded here. In the middle of the 9th century the area had become known as Luceria. In 1178 Lucerne acquired its independence from the jurisdiction of Murbach Abbey, and the founding of the city proper probably occurred this same year. The city gained importance as a strategically located gateway for the growing commerce from Gotthard trade route.
In 1415 became a strong member of the Swiss confederacy, after gained the independence from Emperor Sigismund.

Hofkirche
The twin towers of the church of St. Leodegar, which was named after the city's patron saint, sit on a small hill just above the lakefront. The church is popularly called the Hofkirche (German) and is known locally as the Hofchile (Swiss-German). In 1633, a fire destroyed the church; it was rebuilt in 1645. It is the most important Renaissance church in Switzerland.
The interior design and furniture are almost wholly original Renaissance from the 1630s and 1640s.
The main doors are carved with the two patron saints of Luzern: on the left is St Leger, a French bishop who was blinded with a drill (which he is holding), and on the right is St Maurice, the martyred Roman soldier-saint (see the pictures from History chapter).

Chapel Bridge and Water Tower
The River Reuss have lot of bridges. The most famous is the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke in german) with 200 m length. The wooden wooden bridge was originally built in 1333 and it is the oldest wooden bridge from Europe. The covered bridge, was designed to help protect the city of Lucerne from attacks. Inside the bridge are a series of paintings from the 17th century depicting events from Luzern's history. The Bridge with its Tower is the city's most famous landmark.
In 1993 burned in a fire (caused by a group of smokers)) and had to be replaced.
The bridge runs by the octagonal Water Tower (Wasserturm), a fortification from the 13th century, which has served as a prison, torture chamber, watchtower and treasury. The tower is 43 meter height.

Lake Lucerne
Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstattersee) is a lake in central Switzerland, the fourth largest in the country. It is called also: "Lake of the Four Forest Cantons". The lake have a strange shape, with arms reaching from the city of Lucerne into the mountains. It borders on the four Swiss cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden and Lucerne.
The Reuss River enters the lake at Fluelen (the part called Urnersee) and exits at Lucerne. From Fluelen to Luzern you can travel with the ship.
