Professional or Amateur?

posted on 5th of january, 2009

What makes one a professional photographer? A degree, years of experience, expensive equipment, your images on the billboards in your town?
Why am I asking this question? Well, photography has been my hobby and my passion for over 4 years, I've had a privilege to assist couple photographers who did it for a living, I've upgraded/expanded my equipment and I am trying to learn more and more. Please understand me right I am not doing all of that for the sake of getting a new title but at the same time I don't want to be simply an amateur for the rest of my life. I want to be a very good photographer!
So, after hearing my clients say that I should charge more for my work, that the quality is very high, I started thinking if I am getting towards my goal? But what is going to be that finish line for me?
Please, share with us what you think and let us know how you became a professional photographer!

Thank you.

Very good article! I want to graduate from being an amatuer one day, too! I want to continue to get better and better. But I suspect that everyone is a life-long learner. :)
