Carnival time!!!

posted on 27th of january, 2009

We're just starting to recover from Christmas, and here comes Carnival, with its flurry of masks, music, dancing, costumes and disguises!

I've always been fascinated by the different ways Carnival is celebrated around the world, from the samba-fuelled craze of Brasil to the relative sadness and glum of the German and Swiss ones (like the one in Basel), to the "jump-back-in-time" pomp of Venice, with people wearing costumes that have obviously taken years to build.

Yet, Venice is the one I prefer. It may be the setting, with the February fog making this timeless city even more fascinating, it may be the veils behind the masks, hiding people's eyes and making them even more mysterious, it may be the almost total absence of loud contemporary music, allowing you to concentrate on what you see.

In any case, Carnival certainly is a very good occasion to take wonderful colorful pictures!

Eclecticelegance, yes, it is. Mardi Gras is Carnival. Well, actually Mardi Gras, (French for Fat Tuesday), is the last day of the carnival season, which is followed by Ash Wednesday.
Have you ever been to New Orleans' carnival celebrations? I'm from New Orleans, but I don't have too many Mardi Gras photos, and those I do have aren't too great. And since I'm currently in Japan, I'll have to wait until next year to get any more.

Is Carnival like MardiGras in Louisiana in the United States?
