Recently my husband and I decided to visit Alcatraz Island. We have been a couple times in the past but we had not been for several years so we decided to go out to the Island because it was a beautiful day. To get over to the Island you take a Ferry Boat which is always enjoyable to ride.

In the past we only went straight up to the top of Alcatraz Island to the location of the Prison but this time around we got lucky to get on the Island in time for a Ranger Tour of the Island. We got to go in places that was off limit to the public do to unsafe areas plus our tour group was one of the last to go in this area for several months do to the Western Gull breeding season about to start. Alcatraz Island is home to one of the largest Western Gull Colonies. On the Island Tour they talked about the plants and animals that live on the Island. Plus we got a chance to see some of the Gardens that are being restored to how they use to be in the late 1800's to early 1900's.

Alcatraz Island Info:

Alcatraz Island was originally an Army Fort to protect San Francisco starting in 1852 and was decommissioned in 1907. In 1934 Alcatraz became a Federal Penitentiary as a High-Profile, Maximum Security Prison. The prison was shut down in 1963.

Out of the 1,545 prisoners that stayed in Alcatraz only a few of them had been notorious. The most notorious prisoners in Alcatraz was Al Scarface Capone, Doc Barker, Alvin Creepy Karpis, George Machine Gun Kelley, Floyd Hamilton, and Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz.

The Lighthouse on Alcatraz Island was the first Light House along the Pacific Coast.

Today Alcatraz is a National Park that visitors all over the world come to see.

Thanks everyone :)

In the past when I visited Alcatraz I was not into Photography but now that I am I figured this was a great opportunity to add Alcatraz to my Portfolio. Photography has also brought out a passion of really enjoying historical places / buildings which made this trip to Alcatraz an even more enjoyable trip for me (Always enjoyed visiting this place but this trip was just a lot more enjoyable)

Take care and keep 'em posting.

I was them in September 2006 and I still have some great memories.

seems like an island with lots of legend, can't help imagine the situation as "prison breach", anyway, really nice for the island view.

I have seen Alcatraz before from San Francisco, but have never been on the island. I think it would be interesting to visit - and your blog article renewed my interest!

About me

Update November 17, 2010: Earlier this year I made a decision that I would not be selling my photos any more but would start removing my photos in November. I would like to thank everyone that has given me wonderful comments on my photos the past several years and to the the buyers that have bought my photos. I now will only be displaying my photos for show in a photography journal that I have created which you can find the link listed under my website. I've recently started going back to school for a degree in Zoology and trying to keep up with my stock photography and schooling ... [Read more]
