My love affair with horse-racing

posted on 22nd of february, 2009

Up until two years ago, I would have considered a day at the races to be something to associate with champagne, a few bets and watching primarily flat racing.

Then I met my partner and suddenly I was seeing the world through the eyes of a National Hunt (that's jump racing) fanatic. I quite enjoyed the experience and then I got to go into the middle of the race-course and saw the horses close up.

Photographing jumps became my passion, one longer lens anda monopod later I have now taken photos at Newbury, Cheltenham, Towcester, Sandown and even Leopardstown racecourse in Ireland!

Whilst I don't get the results that the press pack get, they are much closer and have their remotes twitching to take pictures from underneath the hurdles to get those pics you see of the underside of horses jumping, I've still got a fair few that have sold well under the editorial banner.

I'm still learning but I see battling with elements, lighting (National Hunt is a primarily winter sport in the afternoon when its getting darker) and OTHER PEOPLE has seen my abilities improve.

thanks, that's really kind! I'm at Newbury again on Friday, I'm hoping the light will be more kind to me.

Frankly sometimes i think the jockeys in the parade ring can be twitchier than the horses!!

Good pictures, no need to worry... I love horses, they are the hardest subject, I think even women are easier ;)
