I'm in the News

posted on 17th of april, 2009

Ok not me, but some photos I shot recently. I'm sure a lot of photographers on Dreamstime have goals they wish to achieve. Well for me the big one was to get photos in the News section, which is a great resource for anyone looking for editorial pictures of major world events. I have previously been disappointed that images I've sent have not made the News section, only consoling myself with the fact that Dreamstime seems to be quite selective with the events and images they choose for this section, as you can see, News section. Well the event I covered was a major one, only the second direct election in Indonesia's history. So I just had to make sure I got the pictures right.

Voting started at 7am and continued till Midday. 'The early bird catches the worm', so I arrived at the polling stations at around 9am and missed out on all the savoury bird food. I was surprised to see voters dressed up in traditional or at least partially traditional outfits. Can you remember the last time you got dressed up to go and vote? Another thing that struck me was how patient people were in waiting for their turn. The electoral process is not exactly efficient, with dozens of parties to choose from and this being national and local elections, each voter has to make their tick on 4 huge ballot papers. Often voters were in voting booths for up to half an hour. Despite the long process the turn out was quite high, it seemed that people realised the importance of taking part. Just over a decade ago people would have been too fearful to voice a political opinion, other than a pro government opinion. The transgression to a genuine democracy after centuries of colonial rule and more recently a brutal dictator, is quite an achievement.
Altogether I had 8 images accepted of the election with 4 making it to the News section. I hope that there will be many more in the future.

Creativei, I'm glad u got a bit of an insight through reading this, but it's not my country. I just went travelling a few years ago and decided not to go home. I literally threw my return ticket in the trash. Thanks for reading and your good wishes.

Hi Komar, it was nice to know little bit about your country through your blog, you should be proud that you were able to convey this message to us, hope you have a good leader at helm of power. Nice images, and congrats again for hitting the news stand.

Marilyn, in this country where things move so slowly, if you don't learn how to become more patient, you couldn't enjoy living here, despite the beautiful scenery etc. I think that I have become more patient as a result of living here, but still lose my temper from time to time. Thanks for your wishes.

Thank you Tracy, so do you. I can see that you are very experimental, so therefore you have a good variety of pictures. Keep it up.

Congratulations Komar, a great achievement for yourself as well as for the country in which you reside. It was very nice to read about how patient the people were in spite of the wait, "patiently waiting" is not often seen where I live. Best wishes to you for may more successes!
