Suceava's fortress ruins

posted on 22nd of june, 2009

The oldest Moldavian fortresses are mentioned in documents in the second half of the 14th century or early 15th century, as follows: Suceava, Neamţ, Hotin, Ţeţina, Şcheia, Cetatea Albă.

I had the opportunity to visit this fortress and I was impressed by its beauty. If you have any opportunity to visit, do not hesitate.

The turks of Mahomed II The Conqueror in 1476 and the polish army in 1497 didn`t succeed to get this fortress. It was conquerd by betrayal in 1538 by the turks of Suleiman the Magnificent.
The turks demand the demolishion of the wall and the movement of the moldavian capital to the city of Iasi (in the time of Alexandru Lapusneanu voyvode)
After some renovation in the time of Vasile Lupu (1635-1653) the last episode of the Suceava Fortress is in 1675 when at the order of Ottoman emperor, Dumitrasco Cantacuzino the leader of Moldavia country put the fire in the stronghold. After some years later an earthquake destroied the rest of the fortress.

Looks like an interesting place. I would like to be a child again and just run, play, and explor around in it.

As the fortress is now, it is like a labyrinth of ruins. :) It's nice to walk there, whatever the occasion is.
