Diary of a rueful microstocker

posted on 19th of december, 2009

I bought my first digital camera on 2004 ans I discovered stock photography on 2006, I was searching if I could do some money with my pictures and discovered microstock agencies, what people call "big 6". Beginning were very very frustrating, rejections a lot and more, sites that requires 10 pictures accepted to be contributor and they rejects all you send, etc...

So one year ago I decided to be DT exclusive, it had a very attractive option for exclusives. And here I am

© Maigi (Help)

I would like to talk a bit of my feelings, sometimes I get too many involved with stock, I check DT page every day and I become very very happy with every sale or every picture approved but on another hand I got very frustrated and depressed with rejections. I tend to compare myself with others: I look at, for example,Starblue or Maigi's or Sleiselei or Justmeyo, only to mention a few, portfolio's for example and tell to myself: "I won't never be as good as they, I will never will be able to produce the wonderful images that starblue's" etc...

Not to mention about "Top contributors", I don't look at these because I don't want to depress myself more ;);)

Well, I just need to take this like a hobby and just keep uploading, besides sometimes I would stop because of rejections, and just be happy with sales.

Participating in forums is fun, I take part of community and express my opinion, or just get fun in some topics like Nice

I was thinking in buy a DSLR but I think I'll stay with my G9 until it breaks and then yes, I'll but a Canon EOS

I'm not a pro, but rejections hurts (Sometyimes I tend to consider they personally, yep I know it's a error), as well as sales cheer me up, so I need to try to get fun with this and don't let me affect my mood ;)

I have also learned a lot these years, about what's stock, about isolations, noise and so... pity I can't have any models because all people I know don't want to be published ;)

I wouln't every imagined that I would had 63 dl with that olympic flame picture!! Or that the cave series that I was so proud to take and get accepted don't

I'm also proud and happy to had 3 accepted pictures for assignment

I didn't expect to win, I'm just happy to get them accepted :D:D

So finally, I would say to those people who gets frustrated and depressed and angry, not to give up (in spite that sometimes I would do!), just keep uploading and get fun of this

Merry Christmas and happy new year to everyone!!!

You have a great portfolio, I envy you. I just bought a G11 last year and still learning how to use it. Seeing what you have achieved has given me the inspiration. I wish you all the best in 2010.

I repeat: I like your work!

Your portfolio is just as noteworthy as those you have mentioned! Comparing yourself to others is not as helpful as noting the improvements in your own work. Cheers!

I concur with all people here, your portfolio is great! A bit of healthy emulation is always good, but there's no point comparing apples and oranges - as long as you're getting some good result and making progress, that's what matters.
If I may give you a bit of advice though, maybe you'd benefit from going through your portfolio and tidy it up, consolidating some shots that are similar and simply diluting your revenues. That could possibly bring more of your shots onto higher levels. Just a thought.

Your portfolio is very impressive and your sales look wonderful. We just aren't in a get rich quick field of creativity but its rewarding in many other ways. Happy Xmas and New Year 2011. David.

The trick is to compare yourself to yourself! You've got an amazing and successful portfolio too!

Hey Titania1980 if you think that your portfolio is not great! What should I call mine :)) Well not comparing yours is simply great! I'm sure sooner or later your sales will increase... Just be patient like you said...

I think your martini glass is HOT! Be true to yourself in your pursuit of imagery. If you are having fun and doing what you love, all else will follow.

Personally, I think you are doing great. You upload an average of 33 images per month using nothing but a pocket camera. You have stiff competition with all the SLRs here but you still manage to hold your own. Cheer up, as long as you enjoy what you are doing, what does it matter what everyone else is doing? Have a great Christmas and good luck for 2010 :0) Cheers Carol

Hello and many thanks for your beautiful compliments about my photos, that is wonderful for me to read them, of course. :-) But le me say as well that you have many very beautiful images - those of aquarius are exccellent, but I also like so much your German Shepherd, fruits, flowers. I think there is absolutaly no reason to believe that you canĀ“t be as those whose portfolio you like. For example, here is an image of yours "Martini cocteil" - it is excellent! :-) I do believe that your successe can grow and grow as you have a splendid potential and your portfolio is great! I wish you so much to get a BIG DOSE of enthusiasm, to get many sold images, to have many ideas and go on with photographing your wonderful dogs, food, landscape... I wish you to have a big success in 2010! And for now - a wonderful Christmas!
