Hello World!

posted on 18th of january, 2010

Hello all, I'd like to take some time to introduce myself to the community of designers and contributors here at Dreamstime.

I'm a graphic designer who took a bit of break from the creative life to pursue a less creative, highly bureaucratic job with the government. Yeah, it's been an interesting ride...maybe not as crazy as the one in the shot to the left, but pretty wild.

Turns out though, creative minds tend to sort of waste away in that kind of atmosphere and I missed the creative process more than I could admit. For the past year, I have been pursuing my creative aspirations once again designing advertisements and publications for a local magazine.

I have been involved with photography in one way or another through every stage of my career - even the not so creative jobs. I can't say it has been a "passion" as many photographers would claim. Until now I mostly viewed it as a means to an end. I'd take the photo to get what I needed for my job.

However, the more I submit pictures and learn about the subtleties of lighting, the intricacies of composition and getting to know what makes a photo "sell" the more I can feel that "passion" bubbling to the surface. I've started looking for "good lighting" wherever I go and keep squinting my eyes trying to see the world through that tiny but revealing viewfinder.

Hopefully I'll get this thing down. As a long time graphic designer it feels easy for me to spot a "great" picture. As a fairly new "semi-pro" photographer I'm finding it is even more difficult to actually make those pictures. As my not so hot acceptance ratio attests, I'm still learning the ropes, but I hope to provide the designers here with some great stock for their online and offline efforts.

Thanks for all the support guys! I look forward to learning more about photography here from the eagle eyed editors and the talented contributors. Ok, so I don't call the editor's "eagle eyed" when I'm checking the rejected submissions list....yes Porjii, the acceptance ratio is a definite work in progress : )

Hello. Good luck and I hope your acceptance rate gets higher; you probably know about what pain I'm talking about

Welcome and good luck. DT has made me pay more attention to photos and for sure helped me become a better photographer.

However don't forget stock and art photos are not 100% "compatible". Art photos brake the rules, look great with less lighti, look interesting if blurry . . you get the picture! Play with the camera and let yourself be as creative as you feel You may take pictures that are not stock worthy but they can still convey feelings and emotions (if not more so that traditional stock photos)!
